Yep they're a bastard for that old son. Once they're fixed all is good

I reckon that's why i like em as not easy you need to grow the relationship, blokes I shoot with put their rifle bullets in the same friggin hole 10 - 12 shots in row dear me how dull boring. Still to be fair they reckon I,m the nutta:msp_smile:

Hey I reckon the Number 1's and other single shot classics tend to become more in favour as you get older. Young guys aren't interested as much in marksmanship as putting 50 rounds downrange as fast as they can. It's really rewarding to smack an animal with one shot knowing if you don't kill it you don't have a backup shot available straight away. Single shots tend to change your mentality and concentration in my opinion and the results are more rewarding. On the odd occasion with simple feral animal control a few more shots up your sleeve helps a lot but just sitting along a fenceline popping ferals all day and the Number 1's fit the bill perfectly.
20 years ago I hated the Number 1's - now I want one :D Although I own a 77/22 I'd never touch a centrefire Ruger bolt action. I've seen too many issues despite being a strong action. Trying to site in a couple of their M77 stainless synthetic "boat paddles" for mates did it for me. Their non adjustable trigger pull was akin to pulling a cat off a flyscreen...

Ta that sport but ordered yesterday Fleabay $56 leupold set plus US post

Bummer. I only remembered I had them tonight when I was digging around in my shed. I think they were off my brother's M77 Varmint in .220 Swift. They weren't tall enough to fit his Hubble type scope (your words :) ).

My $10 B Square rings I ordered with that Nikon have more clamping force than a 50 tonne press and are designed to not move even under the hardest recoil. Yeah right :D That's why they fitted them with tiny little Torx bolts and made them in China...

matt if you start playing with VT rugers it will change your mind one of the best adjustable trigers and the grouping aint to shaby ether

A bit late but there are lots of attachments for the old 08S saws. I have this one - it is a brute of a brush cutter.

years ago i had a CBC single in 223 and it was very handy, i traded it on a new model 77 stainless in 223 and the rifle has done sh#tloads of work over time and it is still as accurite as the first time i sighted it, today however i'd love a no 1 in maybe 22 250 or even 308. I was the same shoot all day to get a couple of whatever, nowdays i don't even fire a shot unless its going to hit what its surpossed to so a no 1 would be lovely...
still like my no 4 tho the sound and hitting bit of the old 303 is something else, just right on our big roos, useing todays ammo of coarse.

Yeah my brother has a nice, older varmint M77 in .220 Swift. A few too many strikes for me with the Ruger M77's I'm afraid. I know there are good ones out there but I've seen too many accuracy, feeding, and bedding problems. Just like the Remington 700's...

Ah the good old No 4's. I'm with you on that one :D Mine is a US Property job with twin groove rifling.

The old Savage No.4, you should give it back. LoL!

I forget who made my No.4, I think it is a dash 2 refurb. Annie has a No.5, she shoots it well, it beats me to flinders.

thats what my one is, when i got it years back it was i guess rebarreled and stored with just an odd ding in the wood work, it was from lambrance ordinance so i'd say the yanks sold a container load to them. I still have some original bullets which came with it, but i don't use them much only an odd shot to show how they used to sound, its marvalas how many mates when visit want a shot because they have never had the chance to shoot a military rifle with such back round.

Randy mac,,,,
the no 5 is the short barreled jungle carbine isn't it, i've seen them and can remember my dad saying they were used in new guinny (no idea how to spell that). I asked my dad what he was issued with back then and he said he was given the no 4 for a bit but when they finished transport training and headed over to port moresby they were all issued with owen guns before starting operations, he drove army ducks during the later years of WW2 and for nearly 1 year after it was over dumping militatary equipment.

Rick,,,,,,,
sorry to correct you mate, that timber was spotted gum at our training day, which is way harder than blue gum.
the billets were iron bark and yes they were harder.

Well perhaps consider a Ruger no1 in 303 there a few around and new price is bouncing about $12-1300

Their non adjustable trigger pull was akin to pulling a cat off a flyscreen

Now that was truly funny :msp_biggrin: Me was lucky mine came with a Kepplar set trigger still even it was a bit of PITA to set right..

The sound of 303 is different I sit in the range butts and pull the targets 223 308 make a crack n thud the 303 it a very different whack when one comes in over ye head.

Hey, I am getting old and I have always loved my single shots. Here are some of mine:

Nice hey getting old ya to right I turn fff,,,ffftt,,ffffy,,,,dam 50 on monday phew there I said it :msp_scared:

Is that a 303 ruger tropical?

Last weeks at ma range club was a 303 shoot prize met. A bloke who writes about OZ war history came along to watch and was asking why is and what would be the descriptive word for a 303 round as it goes down range as quite a different sound they can make to 223 and 308.

I considered this an did not know why but said I reckon German ww2 blokes would have words for it like Ach mein Gott im himmel scheisse :msp_biggrin:

Nice rolling block Randy, that would be fun to shoot in .357mag. It would be fine for pigs over dogs here - you could hold the dogs off with one hand and pop the grunter of with the other. I bet it doesn't weigh more than 4lbs or so.

Derwoodi, you are only a pup! I turned 55 last year and retired. That lasted 6 weeks and I am now back on contract for a year. I am working longer hours than ever but love it. Funny how work is more enjoyable when you don't have to do it.

Neil, my No 1 is a 45/70 which I use full power loads in. With 420 gn bullets at 2000 fps it is not far behind a .458 mag. The others are 45/70's and a 45/90. I really like big bores.

Al.

Nardoo,,, a 45/70 well that would be fun, glad your feeding it not me hahaha. Ive had a couple of shots from a 45/70 handy rifle a mate owned, being light it wasn't nice to shoot and he got rid of it. I bet they have a big curve in its projectory and dig rabbit burrows when the bullet lands. good stuff.
