Neil, they shoot fine out to 200 m or so and are much more accurate than you would believe. This is a 50m target with cast bullets and open sights. Near as darn to 1 MOA.

Recoil is there but bearable with a decellerator pad. I use a 338 mag and a 375 H&H on sambar and you don't notice the kick. They do hit hard at the other end though.;)

nothing wrong with those groups mate, and yes they would hit bloody hard at the other end. wasn't the 45/70 originaly 45 calibur and 70 grains of black powder.

303 is the bigest i own, i did own a 1903 in 306 many years back but gave it to a mate for a back up gun and never saw it or he again.
i love my little ruger stainless in 223, cheap to shoot (i have kids) and brings down everything in our part of oz.

My preference for the 45/70 was using the 425 CBE slugs with 56.5 grains of W748. I found the double base W748 wouldn't 'kick' the round like 2206, but tended to move the lead bullet into the rifling and then a nice consistent acceleration up the barrel. Not as nice as black powder, but then black powder didn't have the velocity as a nitro powder like W748.

Even then, the recoil off a bench was enough to rattle your brain - definitely not something to shoot with a hang-over.

I had a 1873 Springfield Infantry rifle, I loaded to original specs with BP and soft lead bullets. It shot well enough, but the rainbow arc took practice to hit stuff. In the right light, you could watch the slug go down range.

A mate of mine got me to try his Springfield 1873 with a nitro (4198 as I remember) Postel bullet load - laying prone.

As much interest that I have in the old Springfields, that experience tends to make me a bit shy around those rifles.

Neil, there is nothing wrong with the old .303. I shot an awful lot with those in the old days. Only have one left now and it never comes out of the safe. It sits beside an old 1909 Mauser that my father in law's best mate's father liberated in WW1 (it is a 'kitbag' rifle) where they argue endlessly.

Terry, I never did try the Winchester powders in the Ruger when I was working up loads. I am happy with the ADI stuff as it is made only 30 km down the road from here. The full power loads are only used for hunting and I don't notice the recoil then. Those Springfields with the steel butt plates can be cruel in shirt sleeves.

Randy, I love BP loads in the old guns but I don't have a trapdoor. I really like the under-levers best. This is a ten shot group at 100m with my heavy Sharps 45/90 using an MVA Soule. It is cheating really as it is a duplex load with 5 gns of Benchmark 1 priming 74 gns of PP with .200" compresssion and a home made lube cookie. It shoots wonderfully and is so clean that I don't wipe or use a blowtube unless it is really hot.
Velocity is nearly 1300 fps with a 450gn Saeco postel. That is a 22/250 cartridge beside the group and if that first shot wasn't a high flier it would have been 3/4 MOA - actually better than my old eyes can see.

hahah, yes i have seen an odd weatherby eyebrow back when i was a member at the kempsey SSAA.
one member and mate always insisted on his remington 7mm magnum for centerfire benchrest, often i used to spot for him and it would catch him bigtime on occasion and i used to tease him when i used my big powerful CBC single in 223. That little short thing pointed very good and i had lots of fun snipeing crows and rabbits at long distance. When i traded it on my new 77 stainless i actualy got more for it as a trade than i payed for it, maybe they simply adjusted the new price to make the old a better trade.

that rem 7mm was good to watch, flame shot out about 1 foot in front and the grass would lay down flat in front also.

yes it was neil just like the 45/90 and 45/120 and then you get in to all the sharps they even had 40/70 wich was a rimed and necked down case. a necked down 45/70 2 1/4" 330 grain pill at 1500 fps theres hundreds of them. cheers

Thanks guys, with all this gun talk I miss my guns, I want to go back to the folks place and dig out the ol' hog leg and have a shoot, Ruger Vaquero ss in a 45lc cartridge, a hoot to shoot with BP loads

What do you recommend David? We've had no luck here with systemics on Fig Longicorn as they go straight for the hardwood - they love Persimmons for some reason. Systemic Imidacloprid (Confidor, Confidor Guard etc etc) did nothing at all which is what I suspected but had to have a crack :) Not enough sap in the hardwood to effect them one little bit. Most systemics follow the path of highest sap flow (ie: young growth). This also tends to be a long way away from where boring insects attack and the dose they get from penetrating any bark does very little as a rule. If you have had any success with a systemic let me know mate - I'd be very interested. To the best of my knowledge even forestry has had no luck with systemics on Longicorn beetles as they tend to work best on sucking insects (ie: scale, mealybug, Jassids etc), not chewing insects.
Best way is to keep trees as healthy as you can and when young spray the crutch every month with Bifenthrin for example. If something was systemic in a plant to kill beetles then it would probably kill a donkey as well at 200 paces I'd reckon :D
Little bastards...

I agree with your comments Matt

I thought the Blue gums were ones that Rick had planted, This is based on my recollection of something he posted 12 months ago.
I might be recollecting wrong though.

What's wrong with chemicals that make trees that glow in the dark, just wear your respirator when your using the chainsaw

hahaha, Will there bloody noisey things, and they need cleaning ect,,,,

actualy the local policeman checked my safe a few months ago, he rang and said he comeing over after work which he did. I opened it and he looked and counted each one and said yep thats what should be in there, so obviously they check up before they come and know what is meant to be in there.

Really interesting I've be awaiting for that visit, all cool with my list but I only hear of home firearm inspections in QLD and NSW none form talkers in Vic what did they ask do n say. From memory they need to call a day in advance to let you know on way.
My safe is well hidden in the home structure and I kinda don't want even honest cop to see where it sits but will not question if told to show.

Run out of things to yap about with chainsaws fellas shame shame shame

Ok here conversation primmer any you chaps done defence force service or cadets training. My 14yold boys just begun and done weekend recruit boot camp he reckon was tip top so he's thinking ADF is a career.

yes,,,
he rang and asked if he could inspect the safe because the property is on his way home from the station and was going through every one on that road, if i wasn't able to be there he said he simply will ask for a suitable day for both and get it done. He was no problem and simply needed to look and check, he was happy to chat about them and he asked me if unwanted shooters were coming onto the property uninvited as he was cracking down on those blokes. We talked a lot on our visiting resident, mr malcom naden (australias most wanted, caught and now behind bars) as he was hideing in our area.

A point to this, i had no worries and nothing to hide but, he knew what was supossed to be there and he did check the bullets to be sure they were the right ones and, he never looked around anything else or even hinted at that but if he smells a rat it may result in a different story.

not to disrespect the police ,but the weapons dept for each state are so far apart its not funny,
we had two of those searches, first one was for the wifes guns ,the police rang and asked what time would suit,
she came out ,now thats 50 klms from town ,inspected the safe ,checked guns and serial no's,all good, said she was done ,i thought she might as well get my guns out of the way too but No,i wasn't on the list,
about two weeks later its my turn, same thing ,came out ,checked them over and then this came up ,according to the paperwork i had a 243win in my possesion ,no i answered ,havent had that rifle for about five years,i went through all the proper disposal BS paperwork and brokerage but because it was sold interstate they had no clue,
now this rifle is registered in two states with two owners.................schit,this could get ugly,
luckly my brother has it now,had to get a copy of his reg papers and stuff to the local police to prove it,so much for going through the correct proceedures....just my rant ,sorry fellas

to be there and he did check the bullets to be sure they were the right ones

Yes I'm sure few lads get it wrong by having calibre for firearm not on the list a question would need to asked err whats this for.

Has any thing happened about this or has it gone away Firearms Amendment (Ammunition Control) Bill 2012 - NSW Parliament
Overview of Bill The object of this Bill is to amend the Firearms Act 1996 as follows: (a) to prevent the sale of ammunition by a licensed firearms dealer to a shooter unless the purchaser is the registered owner of, or has a permit to acquire, a firearm that takes the ammunition (in addition to the existing requirement that the purchaser must hold a licence or permit for a firearm that takes the ammunition), (b) to require licensed firearms dealers to keep records of purchases and sales.

ummmm, sorry mate most of this has gone through to the keeper,(been a long day) last time i got some ammo, the procedure was same as always,,,,, ask for what i want, show licence, after ammo placed on counter, pay for ammo then walk out of shop.

not much of an answer to your question but thats all i do.

splitpost,,,,
mate i have heard many, many stories same as yours and sometimes worse, i have heard stories where the police have rang and come straight round and demanded to inspect and not be nice about it, on and on we hear more bad experiences in these matters, maybe i'm just lucky and our local police showed some common sence.
