Cummins straight 6 diesel think it's got 175 hp of the top my head not sure would have to look at the engine tag to tell you exactly what it is but its got some balls...
Nice mate. They always surprise me when you see them clambering up the side of a steep mountain with a load of logs in tow. Awesome stuff!

Do they run an auto/powershift or manual transmission?

Now if you ask me about timber I could tell you anything....All I know is its a clark transmission and weighs a ton the cruiser sure did sag when we put it on the back haha...Its a three speed- three forward /three reverse and you can shift up or down without backing off and no clutch guess its like an auto/powershift thingy lol , wheres 460cixy he would know...
 
Pretty sure they're a hydraulic box with a torque convertor, but I could be wrong!
I will get a pic of the transmission when we get it back, here is a pic I found on the net of what it more or less looks like..All I know is its big lol and was not to hard to pull out but bugger pulling one apart I wouldn't know where to start haha ...24349_41470.jpg

Sounds like a powershift, like some loaders have etc. And yes it sure needs to be beefy doing that kind of work for almost 10,000hrs lol

Skidders are useless without chains IMHO in steep country I've been stuck down the side of a few mountains trying to crawl back up with diff locks in and going backwards haha...There is no turning when its steep you push a snig track down to the log/logs ,then reverse all the way back up to the top then reverse back down, park the skidder against a big stump/tree (so there is no way it can take off down the mountain) put the blade down lift the front wheels handbrake on get out and pull the winch cable out to easy! lol......
Oh yeah in Australia we call it snigging logs overseas its called skidding logs whatever that is?, the only skidding I do is in my undies when the front axle hits the stopper with one the back wheels about a meter and a half off the ground when the machine is on the verge of tipping over! lol
Generally its a 15+ton hardwood log trying to force the show especially at the bottom of steep ground turning under onto a cutting back to the dump, a big hardwood log will push you clean over you need to be on the ball ready to let the log go as in open the grapple or free spool the winch cable! its all good fun well kind of if you can call shot nerves fun haha.....
dam nice job one thing i mis is woking on heavy equipment.
i agree about the chains there a must.
