Ok good shooters, I need to restock the cupboard, Nearly shot off all the sub sonic 22 (well the boys have any way).
I had a nice stock of win hollow sub and 22 pistol, been years now since I bought any.
Question is, is anything better for quiet plinking round the farm on vermin ( our neighbours are in their 80's and I don't want the kids banging high velocity all the time).
thoughts ???? I will visit our local shop Saturday.

Winchester subs are all I've used for years from plinking to rabbits Neil. I went to buy a couple of boxes the other day and they were all sold out. I ended up buying Highland subs for around the same price and there's no noticeable difference. MCW was saying there is rumors of a shortage coming up so you may want to grab some while you can.

winny subs hollows in the blue box be my pick a tad pricey you may want get some other cheap stuff for the boys to plink and pop off save these for big ears

Shot at 50 yards prone/supported my Ruger as keeping it around the ½-3/4”, which is not bad for a field rifle. Speaking of that; the Winchesters did appear to hit rabbits with a rather more pleasing ‘thwack’ and chest shot rabbits rolled over and died a lot quicker with a lot less thrashing about than brand X.

Thanks guys for the advise, yes we have some bunnies here too, and that is why I want the boys to use subs. The drier ridges are where the bunnies are and that end of the farm is closest to our neighbours. They won't worry but constant high velocity would start to annoy them.
So I will see if they have a brick or two of those blue's, and perhaps something cheaper for play and such.
I have had good results too from 22 pistol (black box), they were quiet and shot straight in my Winchester bolt and Lake field bolt.

here is a slightly bigger toy, a bit of a demo with one of the 90's. For no reason except I can and so on.
This saw gets a run with Husky oil @ 25/1, sorry Matt no Diff oil in the mix.

I think I need to send my 90 jug and carb up your way for some educating :)

That can be done mate, I'd be happy to muck about with it for you. If you decide to send it, you need to send carby, emulsion block, piston / cylinder and exhaust.
I usually prefer the whole saw, its easier that way and I can test the saw on site.

(your the only one who noticed the higher revs she was pulling under load and if I dial it in and run a proper race chain, it is surprising how quick it cuts.) Of coarse your a trained Stihl man and 090 owner so I guess you should of noticed too.

In the Winchester sub sonics there is a 40 and 42 grain have a look here.

thanks, that was helpful. I guess it will come down to what our local shop has to offer, we have a bigger shop front type store in port which would have all the bell and whistles at a price and we also have an old couple round in a side street with no shop front who quietly trade in the district.
They usually have a selection of 2nd hand stuff and lots of ammo, they are nice helpful people who know the trade, I will go there 1st.

The Winnie subs are good but if you can't get em there's no flys on the highland subs and if you want to be real sneaky the z shorts are good but only for about 20 meters

Had a bit of a go at freehand milling last weekend, think I need some more practice. Ha ha. Gave up and went and cut a load of wood instead!

Big week mechanicing ,was a solid 3 days work for me and my older brother just to get the transmission out and sent off for some work..Going to give the old girl a paint job while we have it apart but still lots to do yet.
Just hope we remember how it all goes back together haha....1.JPG 2.JPG 3.JPG 4.JPG 5.JPG

1.JPG 2.JPG 3.JPG 4.JPG 5.JPG Found a big ass crack in the chassis, Fixed it and should be good for a few more years machine has 9500hrs on it getting up there now...Biggest mistake the old man did was not put chains back on after we put new tryes on...
Skidders are useless without chains IMHO in steep country I've been stuck down the side of a few mountains trying to crawl back up with diff locks in and going backwards haha...There is no turning when its steep you push a snig track down to the log/logs ,then reverse all the way back up to the top then reverse back down, park the skidder against a big stump/tree (so there is no way it can take off down the mountain) put the blade down lift the front wheels handbrake on get out and pull the winch cable out to easy! lol......
Oh yeah in Australia we call it snigging logs overseas its called skidding logs whatever that is?, the only skidding I do is in my undies when the front axle hits the stopper with one the back wheels about a meter and a half off the ground when the machine is on the verge of tipping over! lol
Generally its a 15+ton hardwood log trying to force the show especially at the bottom of steep ground turning under onto a cutting back to the dump, a big hardwood log will push you clean over you need to be on the ball ready to let the log go as in open the grapple or free spool the winch cable! its all good fun well kind of if you can call shot nerves fun haha.....
