Dangerous? yup, noticed that, oh&s would have a field day with one of those contraptions, but in the right hands they could certainly cut a heap of sleepers in a day

my cuz has one bit like that, he cut a lot with it, made me use it when I was getting intrested in saws(when I was 12)
he said you got to learn the hang onto one these before you get a saw:msp_w00t:

I know an old timber cutter who used a Hargan for years before he saw a chainsaw. He has a few still - I think this one has a two cylinder BSA motor (but I could be wrong). He tells some stories of them taking off when the saw blade grabs. Sounds mighty dangerous!

One of the old firewood cutters here has two old Hargan saws that he still uses :msp_scared:

Never seen one in action and I'm not sure I want to.

A mate here used to use the FIL's when they lived on the Central Coast.
He calls them widow makers and reckons one bloke lost the blade on one and it flew clean across the Pacific Highway......

Thats a big buss saw Will, usualy the ones i saw only ran vw motors with get-rack power take off to drive round a 40 inch skip tooth blade.
I break down a few logs for our old racing life member (mr bill boyd ) now and then with his swing saw and it runs a big saw (48inch skip tungston), when ever he wants some timber for his farm and you can guess who saws the logs up on his old breast bench. I should get him to video breaking down a log or two, its something not seen much these days.

Your right about that, all the men i grew up with who used them were very strong and knew what to do and what not to do.

That looks like a little Morton, some of those the blade could swivel over and you could fall a tree. I seem to remember my father doing just that when i was very little. The little Morten is still at the farm and my brother got it going a few years back for fun.
Most of the sleeper cutters from years ago used swing saws, which are opposite to the buss saw (Hargon),they have the handle bars in front of the blade and the motor at the back as a counter weight.
Dangerouse yes, but the men who used them were bloody good to watch and it was a cheap way of squareing sleepers and girders.
I should mention the morton was designed for firewood docking and simple tree falling, the bigger, more powerful Hargon was designed to cut sleepers and junk (state rail girders), someone reconed they could improve on the hargon and they cut off the handle bars and welded them in front of the saw blade and thus became the swing saw.

I'd love to see that Neil.

Ok then, since there is some interest, i will get some footage of breaking down a log or two.

Man and their about the same weight as wheeling around an SP125 or my Copperhead so what are you fellas men or mice !!

As regards the old Hargon saw or whatever my next door neibour lost his eye to one years ago when it spat back a sliver dangerous bloody things.

I got a complete 090 clutch from a fella at Wagga plus i have 070 clutches as well
any of you fellas got the front handle off an 090 AV i have all the other bits here or coming i got the trigger assy off stihl and the chinese market the rest of the bits so i have them too.

I used to have one of them smaller types at one stage, wished I took a video of it working when I had it going, stopped using it cause the saws are faster at ripping posts at the end of the day. Have seen evidence in the bush with stumps with the blade marks on them from the circular saw, them blokes that dropped trees with these setups must have had a set of kahunas to to do so, or just plain mad :msp_scared:

forgot about they cut a bloody lot of fence posts as well.

I will get a few pics of the one down at our farm, its about the same size but has a saw guard on top and a spring loaded bar behind the saw for falling i guess.

Those little buss saws like that one will are ok for cutting smaller sleeper logs, (2 sleepers per billet) but the frame height handicaps them and of coarse the saw size.

I won't be dropping in now Neil, I was hoping to get away really early tomorrow but I haven't even unloaded the Landy yet, let alone pack anything for my trip away.....

I had three pubs without cold beer on Monday/Tuesday and walked out of the last pub at 10:00PM Tuesday night, (two compressor changes and a motor replacement, I did a pub crawl without one solitary beer ) then had to finish an office air con install (four systems, piping through the wall cavities and roof space, just for ####s and giggles) and a small split in a house to refit, fix a little shop freezer 30km away, fix the coffee machine in one of the pubs that didn't have cold beer tap and I still have invoices to write up, a book to finish reading and assignments to do for the course I'm starting, turn the pump on down the river, leave signed cheques for SWMBO to pay some bills, and I just found a frigging speed camera fine in the mail :angry2:

If they bothered to look at the photo it's actually the car going the other way, and it says on the notice the car was travelling south, and I was going north.
I've sent them a nice little email, hopefully the Office of State Revenue see the error of their way, otherwise I'll take it court.

MS660 hp what's the go?

Just been reading the owner manual on the new 660 mag, and it has two 660's listed one a mag the other not,
the non mag has 7.1hp and the mag has 7.6ish hp, in th Aust Stihl catalog it lists the 660 mag as 7.1hp,
what really is the Oz 660 mag hp?
