========================================================================

Well if you seen some of the gear private contractors tote you'd be amazed my accounts are from actual experiance not reading books and what the SAS used was their business not ours we had a lot of options with weapons via the yanks my favourite was the quad 50 cal on the back of a M-35 truck or secondly a 7.62mm mini-gun on a jeep ,,,, where it came to support we have the whole arsenal from the base never needed to call a gunship they bloody awsome.

Since when has warfare been humane get over it its them or us 5.56mm does a lot of damage but as i read a few paras back was good for drawing in help to the injured making lovely fresh targets to knock chunks out of and get medics busy think right we were there to take out as many as possible as fast as possible not play Mr Nice Guy the best enemy is a dead one.
Ever seen what a mini gun of 7.62mm does to the human body at 4000 rounds per minute or for that matter a quad 50 cal at 2000 rounds per minute and thats being friendly to em.

Bob

I've seen what the private contractors run Bob. I know about a few of them that went to Iraq as they were nearly all ex SAS. A sh*tload of SAS guys ended up in Iraq doing security and protection work as the money was massive - it actually left the regiment in a bit of a hole. Early on they used whatever weapons they could buy which varied and there was a heap of cowboys over there. Most of these guys ended up getting killed as they were taking on jobs with too much risk that the more professional guys wouldn't touch. I think weapon supply later on was OK but early on the contractors just bought whatever they could on the black market - normally AK's. I haven't heard anything about them for years and not too many of them are still over there.

I agree on the humane bit. It's a bloody war for christ's sake! You can blast a guy apart with a rocket or bomb but can't hit them with small arms fire that blows an arm off. Ah if only the enemy abided by the same rules as we have to. One of the SAS guys in Afghanistan got in a bit of strife for laying out an enemy who was planting an IED with a Javelin missile a few km away. He was out of the range of the other weapons they had. Apparently $100,000+ to kill an enemy is too expensive according to the Australian government. I think that it was cheap :D

Miniguns kick arse as do those gunships. Hitting a human body with any more than a few dozen rounds out of those 4,000 a minute is the trick and anybody that emptied a full minute's worth into a human needs some serious attention :)

By the way Bob, respect for Vietnam too mate :cheers:

Got the video uploaded. I didn't get a chance to use the same bar and chain on all the saws so the times don't mean much, but it gives a bit of an idea of how they perform. I'll do a better job of it next time :biggrin:

I'm not really sure Neil, it's very red and reasonably hard. I tried a small saw on it and it was tough going. The property is near Hampton - in between Toowoomba and Crowsnest. Its more of a 'rainforest' region with tall very straight trees.

Ok, that narrows it down to 7 or 8 species mate, i know the area enough to get about.
I know a portable sawmiller from toowoomba who is working just north of crow behind the pine forest.

Chain Sharpening for Novices

How about the taboo subject of chain sharpening of Super Chisel Chains to suit different timbers you know top plate angle and depth gauge setting for our Aussie hardwoods young Neil

maybe the firewood cutters could lend a hand to help novices like me after all even a old fella like me is still learning.

Uncle Bob.

P.S Cant see me old mate missing out on this great viewing maybe the SAS and the Cops should buy a few to increase their accuracy

IIRC there is red mahogony in that area, at first when I saw the vid on my phone I would of said forest red gum, but that is cutting to easy and the chips are too heavy for frg, I beat you are losing the edge on your teeth quick with the silica content in that wood?

btw, love the 390, sounds great
