Don't get me started on where our aid money goes and what we get back in return for it.
Boat people for 1
I was told we give PNG a million a day ??
It took us 3 months at least to get our Australian visas. We had to have aids tests, Malaria, Hep A & B, chest x rays, Federal police checks etc etc.
Not sure but i think some was a company requirement in case we caught anything up there but some was the PNG government.
We even had to supply finger and thumb prints , how antiquated is that, also give them copies of our marriage certificates as well as any qualifications etc.
So we give them all this aid, and the poms can just get a visa for 28 days in 5 minutes
Go figure ???:msp_mad:

Hey don't worry mate, while you were going through that the Australian government were flying in cases of MDR Tuberculosis from PNG. I don't think there is any disease in your list that isn't there already :)

Maybe I'm naive but I look at it a little differently in that you usually get further with a carrot than a stick, you know, the old hearts and minds stuff.

Build schools, educate the kids and provide medical support usually costs a hell of a lot less than an extra fighter jet or five or another sub.

My mate in the AFP spent a lot of time in Indo after Bali and he ended up having a fair bit of time for the average person there, and he's the bloke that coined the term "I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally...."

Having said that I know people that have lived in Bali for years (yoga teachers) and have had to come home as the ways and attitudes of the locals, the graft and corruption just got all too hard in the finish, even though they were bringing in lots of foreign currency and pumping up the local economy and trying to be very fair and egalitarian about it all too.

Swings and merry-go-rounds I suppose.

Hey I sort of agree mate to some extent but hearts and minds only works if that country has something to give back. I don't think the government is in a good enough financial state at the moment to throw money around willy nilly on feel good projects.
I suppose in some ways you can look at a number of countries as dole bludgers but on a much larger scale. The odd one may have hopes and aspiriations for a brighter future but the vast majority just sit on their arse and are happy to take our money and blow it. No different to giving money to a bum on the street with his hand out every day.
Sometimes I think we also need to look at certain regions from a nature type perspective. By that I mean certain areas can only support a given population - will throwing aid at an area fix the problem long term or will it simply give them an excuse to breed faster and prolong the inevitable?
I have no problem with giving aid in previously sustainable areas affected by war etc but if it is simply an overpopulation issue that can never really be fixed then I say let nature take it's course and try to ignore the sickly little kids covered in flies on the World Vision ads.

Personally I'll give my money to the Royal Children's Hospital etc as it may one day help my own kid(s).

Hah hah. That's why starting eBay auctions at below cost bites you on the arse occasionally. He did a swag of dough on that one :) Somebody got a bargain though. Jakmax have had the LP on special this last month but definately nowehere near that price.

evening good viewers,, well the subject is interesting tonight, PNG and chain. What ever happened to the days when a bloke saw a 090 in cutting something or a chi nee 070 pic dressed to look like a 090.

That seller would of been a little pissed with that roll going for that price, wonder if he learned anything.

Wayne,,, that little feature works a treat hey.

given how scary it is PNG way this maybe to help id the body or any bits found or not eaten :msp_sneaky:

A bunch of us were going to walk the Kokoda twenty years ago and we were all getting fit and prepping (I'd just spent time in the NZ Southern Alps chasing deer so I was fit enough, just trashed my knees...) but then the Raskals started to really get out of hand around Moresby so the older blokes with families got very cold feet and pulled the pin.

One of the local Cockies did it with his first grade playing Rugby sons not too long ago (5 years maybe?) but Peter has no sense of fear whatsoever. The Westpac chopper flew him out of here a couple of years ago after he rolled his 'Cruiser ute several hundred feet down a mountain side and smashed himself up really badly, pretty much broken everything.
The next year he ran the City to Surf :dizzy: Still comes to yoga too and struggles through a class. Tough old bugger.

SIMPLE TRUTH 1

Lovers help each other undress before sex.
However after sex, they always dress on their own.
Moral of the story: In life, no one helps you once you're screwed.

SIMPLE TRUTH 2

When a lady is pregnant, all her friends touch the stomach and say, "Congrats".
but, none of them touch the man's penis and say, "Good job".
Moral of the story: Hard work is never appreciated.

FIVE RULES TO REMEMBER IN LIFE

1. Money cannot buy happiness, but it's more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than on a bicycle.
2. Forgive your enemy, but remember the ass hole's name.
3. If you help someone when they're in trouble, they will remember you when they're in trouble again.
4. Many people are alive only because it's illegal to shoot them.
5. Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then neither does milk.

Bonus:
Condoms don't guarantee safe sex.
A friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot by the woman's husband.
