Hey guys! can someone here tell me the easiest way to change out a rim sprocket on a 550xp? l never thought l'd be asking this question but it aint as simple as a ms261 which l could do in 2 minutes. Pls don't tell me l need to put a piston stop in and make a special tool 2 fit in the holes on the clutch drum. lt's gotta be easier than that! HELP! I know these saws are light and handle well but this saw is starting 2 piss me off! l feel like just hitting it very hard with a hammer more than once.

G'day, if its like this clutch (550xp) you will need a clutch removal tool, you can make one up and use a rattle gun.

I just used a piece of 1/4" steel plate and drilled and tapped some stud holes in it to screw bolts through. I then welded a nut to the centre to run my rattle gun off of. A dedicated clutch removal tool is a lot nicer but in a pinch most things can be worked out. I also used the same plate to get a Dolmar PS9000 clutch off - I just tapped different holes to line up.
Other than that I have actually bought a few specific clutch removal tools for the Dolmars and other smaller Huskys. If the bastards just ran a nut on them like the bigger Husqvarna's then all would be good.

Thanks Niel, yeah thats the one..do you fit the tool over the clutch spider? What a bugger! Probably easiest to take out the shoes and springs first.

yes, you need to make something to fit the centre section with 3 pins, once you make up something and can fit a 1/2 inch rattle, it will wind straight off, I would simply take it to a saw shop, they mostly have a tool for just these things.
You could make a socket work by welding 3 pins to fit in the slots or nicking out so it fits, right turn to loosen off.

The pick up points for the studs on my home made setup index on the red dots...

No worries fellas thanks for the help. Might just pay to get the right tool from dealer. Pretty poor design IMHO. I'll see if l can grab one tomorrow.

A good place for online Husky parts is www.jackssmallengines.com
Used them a number of times and excellent service.
I had a 346XP/353 clutch removal tool here and was pretty pis*ed to find they'd bloody changed the clutch setup on the 550XP so it didn't fit. *******. Thats the sort of thing Stihl does :)

I have modded most of my circlip washers,a small champer does the trick and keep some spare circlips all good.

Heh heh. I just thought I'd better stick up for the Husky brigade and fire a salvo back at Stihl :)
I hope you mean Chamfer?
If not a few bottles of champers would probably fix the problem too.

Yeh c clips are pretty hard to work out... Whether to use a screw driver or a... Screw driver

The way they're stamped they have a natural chamfer to them. The 'machined' 23mm washers that come on the pro stihls are **** when ever I take a c clip of I replace the washer with the normal stamped ones as the centre is not as thick and the clips are easier to get on and off. I am yet to see a washer wear through the centre where it stops against the crank

+1 on that. Those machined washers are a pain in the :buttkick:

And they be the ones I'm referring to.
