Spend all day yesterday fishing and putting out crayfish traps, got a couple of bass and a yellowbelly, fish for brekkie this morning, then off to the dam to empty the traps out, got a few yabbies, enuff for a feed this afternoon, what great way to end one year and start another.

Happy new year everyone

Are you catching the Yellowbelly on lures? We call them Callop here :)

Here is a 59cm one I caught a few years back after work (I didn't weigh her). Despite having a fair few grands worth of top notch gear I hadn't been fishing in the river for about 10 years. This was my first cast in 10 years and she grabbed the brand new lure about 2m off the bank (I think it was an RMG Poltergeist?). I hadn't seen a Callop for so long I didn't realise it was anything special even though my mate was carrying on like a pork chop. He was far more excited than I was - he kept it to eat and unfortunately found it full of eggs. I'd have realised her if I'd have known. This one was caught in Katarapko Creek off a rock weir - beautiful little spot and relatively difficult to find...

(NOTE: Lure was lost in rocks on it's second cast despite my best efforts with a Tackleback :frown:)

MCW, yup, catching them on lures, trolling with SMAK lures :msp_thumbup: one of the neighbours caught one about the 8lb range on a Ridgeback lure yesterday. Nice to see the fish on the bite finally, been a few years. The water finally cleared up about a month ago after the floods from last xmas and the dam went from 35% to 100%+ in a matter of weeks. The Yellowbelly classic that is held there has been called off for the last few years because of drought then floods, looks like this years comp is going to be a ripper.

The dam is Boondooma Dam near Proston Qld /Lake Boondooma | Accommodation | Camping | Fishing | South Burnett Queensland
