Being that I am a relatively new climber I have only had the opportunity to climb about 7 large trees. I am a cigarette smoker and do find that it seriously inhibits how far one can body thrust before having to take a break to BREATHE. I am sad and happy to announce that as of 12:10pm on Sunday October 3, 2004......I'M QUITTING CIGARETTES!!! I hope it works..

I plan to, as soon as the temps get steady into the 70's. The patch won't stick, otherwise. Probably another month or so.

way to go sawboss...!
I smoked 30 a day for 4 years
Quit almost a year ago and never looked back, once you get through that first week Its all downhill from there.
Youll really notice the difference when you are up there and notice how good 2 cycle really smells:D

Dang it, NY....

I too am gonna try to quit. Went out and bought some Smoke Away. Pop some of the pills tonite and hopefully be smoke free tomorrow. You gonna use anything or just go cold turkey?

I think it's time to start A.S.S.A. Arborist Site Smokers Anonymous.:)

I wish you strength in quitting smoking, but you must definitely quit body thrusting, except in necessary crux areas.

I think body thrusting could kill ya quicker than smoking.

OK, here's how ya do it. Buy the brand name patches/gum, not the generic crap. Buy a two week supply of the patch, and a one week supply of the gum. Get the 21mg patches, and the 4mg gum.

It won't be cheap.

Make your quit date on a monday morning. The sunday night before, grab yur beard trimmer and knock the hair off your left and right side of your chest. Upon retiring for the evening, smoke your last cig as you normally would. Heck, smoke two in a row. Enjoy it. Then, physically destroy any remaining cigs, and trash em. Go to bed.

DO NOT PUT THE PATCH ON AT THIS POINT.

As soon as you get up, slap the patch on yur smooth pec. Then, especially if your gonna be working, back it up with duct tape. You don't need much, just something to help out the patch-stickyness. The next morning, slap it on the other pec, and likewise thereafter.

Welcome to the non-smoking you! :blob2:

Now, for the gum. It is nothing but a back-up for the patch. When you read the instructions, it will say not to use them both at once.

I use them both at once. When and if that urge to smoke becomes overpowering, throw a piece of gum in your mouth. Do not chew it more than a few times. Park it in a corner of yur jaw, and ignore it.

Soon, you will be overdosing on nicotine, and that's when you spit the gum out. Trust me, a cigarette will be the last thing on your mind at that point.

Resign yourself to the fact that even if you have to use that patch/gum for the rest of your life, that's STILL better than smoking, and it costs about the same. But don't worry. You will soon learn how to wean yourself off the patches/gum.

I will post that in a later installment for anyone who gets to that stage.

The first stage is doing everything I just said.

smoking

I quit about over a year ago. i gained 25 pounds, body thrusting is a ????? now with the extra weight. I really got to hit the gym. best of luck with quitting, i used the nicorette gum with success so far!!

I'm with TreeMachine!  Quit body-thrusting and you'll be able to continue smoking if you want to.  I don't like to climb X feet of rope twice anyway...

Good luck otherwise.  Cold turkey worked for me.  It's best to surround yourself with folks who don't smoke, if you can.  At least for a couple of months.

That's the worst way you could do it, bro.

Kinda like going to the dentist, and saying "Nah, just pull it".

Sure, you won't die. ;)
