Those blue ones were actually only used on the 450s. They have a built in rev limiter whereas the black trigger modules don't. 450s used a fixed jet card and used the rev limited trigger module. This part may have been removed from a 650, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't original. No reason it shouldn't work though. Scott provides incredible service at chainsawr.

If you have a meter, you can ohm out the transformer (part that bolts over the spark plug). Somewhere on here are a couple threads explaining how to troubleshoot the ignition for the '50 series. The components may all be OK. Sometimes there's a poor ground contact at the base where the transformer bolts on. Sometimes the spring inside the transformer doesn't contact well. Bottom line, don't assume the worse case until you can check a few things first. Best case it you may not need any new parts.

i might toss my 540 on fleabay. it has the original homelite bar but no chainbrake

homelite super650 fix

That looks like the ignition coil but mine is black not blue as you said. I think I am over my head ( and over my wifes budget tolerance ) on this saw. I am going to tinker around with it a little more then I'll post it here for sale if I can't get it running. I ordered rings for my Pioneer P60 from Chainsawr before. They were the only ones in the world who had them. I will call them Monday to see what they have in stock for the super 650. Thanks for all your advise. Paul

Homelite 540 number three is in route, to me. Yay! I swear I'll slow down once I get a few more of them. Will post pics when it comes...

super 650 bottom handle

A new ignition transformer and ignition coil I now have good spark on the super 650. The Walbro WB2 is just dumping fuel so I have a rebuild kit coming. A quick shot of starting fluid down the hole and she fire up. I got excited and put on the 46" B&C for the first time. What a beast. I did however crack the bottom handle plate (12610-2B) the piece that looks like a waffle iron. Does anyone out there have an extra or know how to repair the pot aluminum plate? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'll post pics when she's running.:chainsaw:

That stuff is actually magnesium. May be alloyed with other metals, but its different than aluminum. I've repaired a couple using a strip of aluminum and Devcon. JB Weld would probably work good too. One broke on the side close to the front, so I cut a strip about 1/8" wise and 1/2" or so long. Cleaned the handle good with a wire brush on a Dremel. Clamped the strip down after applying Devcon and let it sit for a day. So far so good. Not the easiest part to find a replacement for unfortunately.

The 750s had an improved lower handle brace that is reinforced, so if you find a replacement, one of these is better than the originals on the 650s. Not sure if the Super was using the improved brace or not.... need to check on that.

Know this stuff is getting off topic from 540s and 8800s, but heck these are still nice Homelite saws right? Here's a pic showing the repair I mentioned previously. I haven't finished it and painted it yet... waiting to get back to the sandblaster.

And, here's a couple pics showing the difference between the earlier 650 and a 750 handle brace. 750 is on the top and a 650 is on the bottom. Think you can tell the areas that are thicker and slightly different design for improved strength.

I saw this and it made me think of this thread. It looks pretty minty. Also pricey, but I'm note a real homelite guy.

Homelite 650

Sorry Lesorubcheek.....

I thought this thread was about Homelite 540's THRU 8800's, not just those two. My bad. Anyway, thanks for the info. You guy's are a wealth of knowledge.

Thanks for the photos too. I will show them to my welding guru at work.

last super 650 thread here

I fixed my bottom plate on the super 650 with JB weld, a small piece of aluminum and some rivets. Here are a couple of photos.

Anyone cut some wood lately with your 540/8800? I noodled some ash with one of mine tonight... Sure was running HOT. I need to figure something out on this monster, I know the 540's run a bit on the warm side- but this seemed a little much.
Wasn't lean, and 4 stroking in and out of the wood. I'm not past putting a radiator on this thing haha. I will be opening up the exhaust on this saw this week, in effort to cool it down. Seemed like I was getting a lot of oil burn from the muffler as well, and I cant figure out why. I wasnt running excessively rich, and the inside of the muffler looked pretty clean last time I checked (not long ago).
How hot are your 540's running guys? And for you guys that have opened the exhaust up, are you guys getting significantly cooler temps?
