homelite 8800

i finally got to playin around with the 8800 and come to find out theres nothing wrong other than hard fuel lines and out of adjustment.this saw will absolutely roar!i cant wait to sink it into the 4 foot oak that fell recently.just the sound of it was enough to sell me on em.but i will prob sell it to buy a more lighter saw so my father in law can cut firewood without the heavy one for himself:biggrinbounce2:

Bill Poor GTG Spring 2012 - YouTube

Here ya go Mitch, I know youd like to see a 550CS cutting some wood. My saw is at 1:30. This was yesterday at the GTG, posted the quickest time in the vintage class. I had to get dirty and take the baffle off and retune. Fought with the tune a little bit, but got her to clear up and made this pass. She was a little finicky yesterday, I will be putting that outer baffle and screen back on. The 8800's and 550CS's are much stronger than the 540, from what I have noticed. Old cylinder technology vs. new I guess.

Who ended up with the 8800 and 550CS from Ebay? Very deserving prices for very deserving saws. Someone got some beauties! Wish I would have bid harder on the 550CS, I thought it should have went a little stronger.. being the rarest of the 540/8800/550CS series.

I picked an 8800 out of a local jred dealers junk barn yesterday for 50 bucks. To the best of my knowledge the only problems it has is the spark plug hole is striped and its missing the clutch cover. But I have not taken it apart. Should I fix it, is it worth fixing, or should I let it go?

Good saws if the parts can be found. Hope to see her run one way or another.

Think this is the one used on the demolition saws (DM-54 and MP-88). No idea why it was made differently other than maybe direction for the exhaust flow.

Dan

That makes sense. This 8800 has a 540 tank and many other replacement parts.

8800 flywheel left. 540 right.

Trying to make one good saw out of a 540 and 8800 proved to be way more work than I had anticipated. Although these saws look near identical, almost every part had been redesigned. A 8800 cylinder will not fit on a 540 case without modifying a lid at the intake boss. The recoils are not interchangeable due to the difference in flywheels. The recoil guts however are the same. The ignition is interchangeable. The intake manifold that clamps the boot onto the cylinder is obviously different but will work with the tabs removed. The top plastic appears to fit ok but the 8800 has air channels molded into it for cylinder cooling. The filter cover is different but appears to function as well.

Sure I'm missing something as that is off the top.

Ported, carb bored. Last cut the oiler passage filled with wood.

Just what I need, another Homelite saw on my want list. The 8800 will look real nice next to my 410.:msp_thumbup: I'm not sure its' going to be real easy locating one of these in South Jersey though.
