Jerry those Tecumseh carb diaphragms were used in several engines over the decades (including engines on augers and tampers). They're easy and cheap to get new still.

cleaned the gunk out of the diaphragm last night. the rubber is still totally flexible and moves easily with slight vacuum on the hole in the cover. pretty optimistic this is gonna be okay. just hoping all the crap comes out of the carb.
also, while i took the carb out i looked at the P&C. that thing is pristine, just like the diaphragm. i was wondering though where the h is the reed valve? does this thing not have a reed valve? there was a "block" between the carb and the engine but couldn't see where a reed valve would fit on that. did notice that there are two pairs of holes; one pair is where the "block" bolts on and the other pair is just above it towards the top of the cylinder. wondering what the top pair of holes does. curiouser and curiouser

I believe a few of those horrizontal jug Tecumsehs were piston port rather than reed valve. Somebody mentioned them in the Tecumseh/Power Products thread months ago. Maybe your engine is a piston port type. I don't see room for a reed valve unless it's between the carb box and the cylinder. Have you removed the intake manifold and looked straight down into the engine?

He did. There's a raccoon family living in there.

yeah, i've taken the carb, the manifold (90º bend toward cylinder), and the third port cover (the "block" i referred to earlier is the third port cover) off and looked directly into the cylinder. didn't see any porting on the piston.
found the pages from the manual in the Tecumseh/Power Products thread. looks like it is called a third port induction. will get pix.

pix of the third port induction. the third port cover-manifold-carb goes over the pair of holes on the right

Wow that is a bit different.. I believe that is still piston ported. All that means is that the intake port gets blocked by the piston to prevent backflow through the carb. I think the other two holes are some kind of boost port, or maybe some sort of transfer port........... but not sure by any means. I guess that is the third port thing.....

Yep. A piston port engine doesn't need to have a port/window in the piston to work. Most PP engines do not have pistons with ports cut in 'em. For example, the McCulloch 10-series saws don't have 'windowed' pistons, and they're certainly piston port saws. Piston port (as opposed to reed valve) just means that the piston opens and closes the intake port as Ambull said. It functions in the same way as rotary/disc valves on those types of 2-strokes..........................except the piston itself is the moving valve rather than a rotating drum or disc.

wow! i never cease to be amazed at how smart them OF's were back in the day before computers were around to do all the number crunching.

Awesome haul Mark. I'm sure your PM box is filling up. That's the first time I've ever saw anything like that Monkey Ward saw it's kinda got that Mono look , very cool.

There's a lot of Remington freaks on this thread, I'm sure you'll be packaging them.

Edit:: Looks like Magnus has one similar. ###################################/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=5692

#2 Edit:: Looks like AS won't let us link to his site. The exact name of the tread is Montgomery Wards history.

Is it designed for a left handed person, is that why the bar's on the wrong side?

Pretty cool.:rock::rock:

Have a look guys, send a PM if you see something interesting. A few are gone already...

Can anyone send some light on this one? Montgomery Wards AX-4310A. Look carefully at this one, you won't see very few like it.

Mark

I have one of those. They have a Clinton engine on them.
