What happened to the holes in the lid on the yellow top? Do some have them and some not?

This one is made in Canada, It might be why there is no holes in the cover.
I don't know if all the yellow cover ones are made there.

Yellow Top Super 250

Hey guys,
I added another nice Super 250 saw to the collection today. This saw is quite clean and also has some stout compression. I haven't measured it yet but I know this will be the best yet. So now I have the more common black top and this nice Yellow top complete with holes in the lid. I know everyone says this but I don't think this saw has a lot of hours on it. It isn't used and abused and how it feels pulling that cord it's a beast. Of course it has the flatback carb, full wrap handle bar, auto oiler with manual over ride, nice rubber grip on the handle and an interesting sticker on the lid or whats left of it. You can make out McCulloch and 25 so maybe 25th anniversay? That would make this saw what 1973? Of course that sticker could have been put on at any time so I guess I can't go by that really. Inside the fuel tank is spotless along with the air filter housing, very clean. From the few yellow top saws I have seen pictures of so far I think they all have the switch on the side and you can see this one is on the top.

So I don't know what the deal is with that just an observation. Nothing on the bottom stamped just a clean block. Muffler is in great shape and the fuel cap is still intact with it's internal valve. So overall I'm happy with it. I have noticed also on the other yellow tops saws I have seen they have the round manual oiler button. This saw has the square serrated button on it like the black top saws. I got a really sweet deal on this. I talked him down without taking the bar and chain and got the deal of the year on it. He didn't know what he had at all and said he was selling this for a friend. He asked me the difference from a regular 250 and I told him about the two and the differences and it didn't seem to matter one way or the other to him. I guess he just wanted to get rid of it and wanted the money. So we both got what we wanted. It is supposed to run great as is so in a few days I'll go out and make a cut with it and see how she runs... It's going to be fun...

That's a really nice one Nick. Did it come from northern Ca? There was a 'porthole' yellow top just like that listed in my local CL last month...............with a 'nice saw' price tag. It was listed along with a late, short black AF cover 'regular' 250. The Super wasn't relisted, but the 250 was.......for almost as much money as what he was originally asking for both of them...

Isn't the Internet great? You can reach out to nearly any place on the planet and snag something you are looking for that you might not be able to find where you live... I am constantly hunting for one thing or another and use as many resources as I can. Usually it pays off..

I dont own a Super 250 yet, but i do own 4 Mac 250's. Does that count for anything. I would like to join the Super 250 club soon.

Thats a sweet Super 250 Nick.
I'm now on the lookout for a yellow top Super.
Thanks to you. :msp_wink:

That's great news, Lee!

Now that your attentions are drawn away from the 166s, maybe one of us can nab one .... :jester:

Merry Christmas, buddy!

If Nick's "new" saw isn't the one that was listed in my area, I can probably hook you up with the seller to see if he still has it.

Something tells me he no longer has that saw for sale anymore... I learned my lesson a long time ago when I found something that isn't seen too often and if I can afford it to jump on it... I have passed up on items and then thought it over and went back to get it and it was gone. So If I see something I been looking for I try my hardest to get it or if I see something in person and go back to it a second time I just go ahead and buy it as I know when I get home I will kick myself in the rear for not buying whatever it was... This was one of those items... It looks much better outside in natural light with a pic but that's all I had at the moment... I'm glad it was brought to my attention as I wanted a Yellow top as soon as I found out they were not too easy to locate... Now I have a few more on my list to look out for.... I have all the patience in the world so sooner or later I'll get ahold of something else good...

Super 250 lid decals

I noticed on these saws that the are a few different decals used. Some have very large print and others small normal print. I see the black tops usually are found with the large letters most of the time. Yellow top saws you just don't see enough of to tell what they have but I'm thinking small letters. Does anyone know about the usage of these decals as in small letters on earlier models and large letters later models? My black top came with large letters and I have small letter version spare lid I got off eBay dirt cheap.

The new addition is a runner!

Got a second Super 250 in a trade a couple months ago. Decided to give my first S-250 (pictured earlier in this thread) to Dave (Ckelp). He has it torn down and will be ordering parts for it shortly. Another one is infected!:D

Anyway, this saw came to me with a rotted out muffler and ignition problems. Replaced the muffler with another that I had in the parts stash. Replaced the 'top switch' flywheel cover with a 'side switch' cover from a 200 (I prefer that switch setup.......no fragile wire). Dove into the ignition. It had intermittent spark. Would start and run for a while, and then just cut out. When testing spark, it'd spin a few times with no spark, hit a few times, and then spin a few revolutions without spark again. Hmmm...

Had to tear it down a few times to chase out ALL the gremlins in the ignition system. Condensor wire was cut/chafed and grounding out. Spark plug lead was loose and not making good contact in the coil. Points needed help (stationary contact needed to be 'tweaked' for the contacts to be 'square' with each other for good contact). Fixed all that and cleaned/gapped the points.

Hot, consistant spark! Put an NOS 30" Oregon sprocket nose (.404-.063, D096 Homelite mount that oils fine with an Oregon inner bar plate) and a somewhat crappy (and slightly long) 95DL loop of chain that I had laying around). Will get a fresh 94DL loop spun up for it.
