Go gently so you don't plug it up and end up breaking out the delicate epoxy of the coil surrounding the stud.

Was the pro 10-10 automatic the predecessor to the pro Mac 10-10? The pro 10-10 auto has the short clutch cover. The pro Mac 10-10 has the long clutch cover.

Hello,

I've been slowly working on my mac 10-10 I bought from CL. It appears to be wearing a factory 16" bar stamp #63541, but although the chain measures at .375 pitch there are only 59 links, Baileys list 60 links. I have counted many times, sober and not so sober. I read that these saws were available with a .358? pitch chain.Is it possible some previous owner put .375 pitch chain on it without changing the sprocket? This is the IPL i have been using for the saw, http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/McC...-60005-MAC-10-10-09-68-to-07-69-IPL-84693.pdf, it only lists 1 sprocket assembly. Any guidance is appreciated.

I think the 3/8" pitch 16" bar will fit either 59 or 60 links. Everything I've seen indicated 60 links but my 2-10 came from its previous owner with a 59 link chain too.

Was looking to upgrade to a 18" bar, but was worried about the sprocket.

60 is correct if the chain and sprocket are new. I have never seen one that used 59 but many Homelites of the same vintage used 59 so maybe someone forced it on. Maybe a really worn chain would stretch to the point 59 would work.

358 chain would actually be .354 pitch and .058 gauge (thickness of the driver), there was also 350 chain that was .354 pitch and .050 gauge. 3/8 chain (actually more like .365) will not work on a .354 sprocket; you would very quickly see that the teeth don't match.

Not sure about the 10-10's but I have a 2-10 with a .354 pitch sprocket on it. The chain on the saw was not though. It took me a while to figure why it rolled so rough when pulled around the bar by hand.

Older ones may have come with .354 pitch but the have 61 DL compared to 60 for a 16" bar.

Your post #512 on page 26 of this thread is what got me thinking on this issue in my mind. My bar doesn't have the 61 dl stamp indicating a .354 pitch chain. Just trying to figure out a bombshell way of determining which sprocket i have.

A hardnose bar will not have a DL count since any pitch will fit as long as the gauge is correct. If you have a sprocket nose bar the sprocket should have the pitch stamped on it somewhere. There were .354 pitch nose sprockets available, I have two or three at home.

Take the clutch drum off the saw and lay the chain over the sprocket and roll the drum like it was driving the chain. You will know in 1/2 a revolution or so if the chain pitch and sprocket pitch match.

A flea market has a pro Mac 10-10 for $60. I haven't looked at it yet, but the most I probably would offer would be $30. ( I already have 7 10-10 variants)

I think it's a hard nose and I can bead blast it and dress the bar if needed. The chain is dull as well, but I can probably sharpen it.
