Some how the pics from the original first post have disappeared - even the ones reposted by minnnt. Don't know what's happening with this new version of the software so I'm going to try reloading them. Here goes:

I hope to be out to the farm this weekend and will get some updated photos of the saw all cleaned and in running order and hopefully a video of it running. Supposed to be a nice warm weekend.

It's up and running!!!!!

Well I finally finished cleaning the Contra S today and Ryan (Ryans4022) came out to the farm to help me play with it. I did a video of Ryan running it for the very first time cutting a fair size piece of well dried black locust. I can't upload those videos from here at the farm as I'm on a cell phone connection but will upload them later in the week when I get back to civilization.

In the mean time here's a photo of me using it.

Carl,

Is that sassafras? If so, we don't get anything nearly that large on this side of the mountains, 5" or 6" at the base is about the max. Looks like the saw is up to the task.

WATCH OUT FOR THE WOLF BEHIND YOU! Haha

Ryan made me do it. LOL

Gary...

Nah it's a black locust blowdown. Very old and hard - Ryan said he expected to see sparks as we cut on it.

anybody get hurt when you tried to start it :msp_biggrin:

Nah...Ryan was drop starting it but I didn't even try that with my mending wrist. It did about break a few of my fingers when I did start it on the ground. 137cc with no decompression valve for those who don't know. :hmm3grin2orange:

Looks good Carl, nice roller tip as well !

Yeah King of my collection. Really love the saw and it is definitely a great runner. I owe thanks to :bowdown:Ric (sawbones) for letting me pry it out of his collection for a fair price. The bar will only be on it for picture purposes as it needs truing badly - was cutting way to the right - rails worn excessively on one side. The chains is nearly new with what I guess is square ground teeth. I've never seen a chain ground like this and if it is square ground can understand why people talk about it being so difficult to do right. I'll try to get a macro photo of one tooth to show the grind (if I can get a good shot).

Have you thought about putting one of the big snowmobile starter handles on it? Two more fingers make a lot of difference.

Have seen that on some saws and guess I should think about it since this wrist isn't healing as fast I had hoped. I used to drop start my 090s too but can't even drop start my 028 now. :(

I put an elastostart handle on my measly 106cc. It made a big difference. Doesn't pull too hard, but I rarely use decomp on my 660.

As Promised More Pics of finished product

Got outside to take some finished pictures today. I'll upload videos tomorrow. You'll love the way it sounds and cuts.

These pics were taken out in the woodlot. Not a beautiful background.

When I buy these old Stihls I like to find ones that are runners and aren't in terrible shape ie don't need a lot of rehab. I like to leave them as is - just clean them up and maybe replace a few parts with OEM parts that match and improve its appearance and running ability. They all have their individual character which is part of my appreciation of them.

I did put a pair of dawgs from another Contra on it that I had stripped and powder coated.

The plastic bonnet came with it but without a badge. The whole saw had been splattered with some green overspray at some time. I had to carefully remove that paint without damaging the original paint. I also had to clean it off the bonnet and aluminum plate (thank heaven for my HF US cleaner). I did Armour All the bonnet to give it a measure of protection.

This is a good view of the bar I put on it. Perfect color match. Now all I need is some rubber handle material - preferably the original green - yeah right!

First two side views...

You can see the new badge (old style embossed not printed on) and you can see the new bar (from another contra). The bar on this one was bent just a little. Luckily it was a perfect color match.

The badge came with a grab bag of Contra/090 NOS parts I purchased off eBay a few months back. Lots of parts in that group that I will end up using on other saws in my collection.

This Gas cap is the old style and I had one that came on a semi-parts Contra that I am rehabing. It looks better here. LOL

More pics in the next post.

I recall when a guy called 7 oaks arrived on the site with a nice Stihl S 10, now look at you Carl !! The S looks great. I never get fed up looking at Contra's and I'm sure I'm not the only one

Yeah - there's an infectious virus on this web site. My resistance is getting stronger though. Ha Ha

Here are a couple more pics that I thought I'd posted but guess I hadn't.

First two are new clutch drum/sprocket and new AV mount. These are parts I had in my parts drawer.

Videos tomorrow.

Video video video

OK here is the video I've been promising!

Contra S (137cc same as 090). This a true rarity with very few made before Stihl went to the 090 with its 6 shoe clutch. 36" roller tip bar and square ground chain. Ryan of Ryan4022 had the honor of being the first person to run the saw.

The bar isn't in the best shape as it needs the rails trued but it cut real nice in this rock hard super dry black locust. Ryan tried hard to bog it down.
