To oil or not oil new cyl and piston

well trust me, i have built one or two race motors in my day, and that is a bad idea, you do what you want, not trying to gte in another arguement, but pouring any significant amount of oil into the head of a motor and starting it is a terrible idea.
 
i don't pour alot in, i just put in a teaspoon in each cylinder of the race motors and maybe a quarter teaspoon in the saw motors. I wonder if the smoke was from the new muffler?

I got a big lump on my head for putting the juice to an old 2 cylinder pony motor D-7 owned my my friends G-pa befor she had oil pressure, you would have thought I spat in his mothers face!!!

Experiences like that make an impression on a youngun like myself...

I read the first 3 pages...had enough of that.

When I rebuild or even open up a 2 stroke, I always rebuild the same way, I have an oil can with Mix oil in it, I give 2 squirts to the main bearings and big end of the rod. Then I put a coat of Echo-Lube on the piston, rings, and cylinder.

I assemble it like that, and spin it all by hand after torquing the cylinder bolts.

When I crank it up the first time it smokes for about 20 seconds, and the exhaust smells odd for about the first 5 operating minutes...

so far Ive never had a motor stick or gall up...it all seems to work great.

Assembling 4 strokes, same deal except I squirt Briggs/Valvoline KArt oil (0-weight) on the bearings, rod, and up under the piston. Then I lube the piston with some Echo-Lube.

Id much rather have too much oil, and be too safe...than have too little oil.
 
My step dad used to say... it ain't worth payin with unless it's wet.... he meant race motors at first start but i suspect it's the same for all engines, crazy ole' bugger or maybe he meant women and motors?!:hmm3grin2orange::bowdown::yoyo:
 
What is the best way to install a new cylinder, piston, & rings. Oil the cylinder before installing the piston??? or start the saw with the cylinder dry???
I know some guys on car engines don't oil the cylinders before. This was supposed to seat the rings better.

any help from the big dogs?? (no pun intended)

I've not read the MANY replies nor do I need too. Also cannot understand why this thread has lived so long.

Only an IDIOT/MORON would put things together, dry.

If you buy a race engine and/or saw from those that do, you are the same as those who assemble them, dry.
