I kept my Dewalt 18volt batterys in the garage, well the cold winter temps killed them. It got cold enough to freeze water, so keep that in mind.

I think the key is the short time in the cold. . . The battery is pretty warm from sitting on the drill, and the battery is already warm from sitting on the charger.

It's a form of thermal cycling -- and it's working like a freaking charm!

Here's a few more pictures of tools I use about everyday. My old anvil. It's ugly but works fine. It's a 100 pounder. A couple grinders. One is an old Delta 12" disc sander with a 12" wire wheel. It's great for shaping up bars. My old Foley Belsaw 308 chain grinder and stand. In the back ground of this picture is an old Cary safe. It was made in the 1930's. It was given to me by my wife's uncle. It weighs close to a 1000 lbs. It has 8"concrete and steel walls. I will post some pictures of it if I get time. The little round silver tray is a Craftsman magnetic tray. It is great when tearing down saws. It holds all my small parts and keeps me from losing them. It is a Godsend that I would be lost without. Actually I have 3 of these.

Iside the old safe

My wife's 86 year old uncle was moving to the city to live with his daughter. He gave me this safe, but had lost the combination. I checked about getting a locksmith to "crack" it but it was going to be very expensive. Her uncle said he had the combination somewhere, but hadn't seen it for 10 years. I ask what was inside and he thought there was nothing. I got mt Kubota backhoe and loaded it my 3500 Dodge. I was going to get inside one way or the other I thought. On the bottom was a metal plate with 4 bolts holding it on. I took it off and found concrete. I got a sledge and hit it about 10 times and got no where. I quit messing with it for about a week.

Her uncle got moved in and called and said he found the combination. He moved about a 150 mile from me. He gave me the numbers over the phone 4 times. I tried for a week to get inside and couldn't. It sat for another month. My wife was going to visit him and I told her to bring me the numbers he had written down. This safe has 6 numbers and 13 revolutions you have to hit for it to open. It took me about an hour to finally get inside it once I had the combination. He was right, there was nothing inside it. Her uncle is a rich man and I just knew there would be something in there, but wasn't.

This safe was made in the 30's. Cary safe company is no longer in business. It has 8" walls with a steel outer housing. It is a very well made safe that will be around forever. I took the 1/2 of million I keep in it out for the picture. LOL. For as big as it is, there's actually not much room inside. It has 2 inside compartments that both lock. I have had offers up to a 1000 dollars for it to date. I think I will keep it.

Cheap easy made spark tester

I made this spark tester with an old plug and a foot of wire and a clip. I drilled a small hole in the base of the plug and mounted one end of the wire to it and an alligator clip to the other. The old metal saws had plenty areas to ground out the plug to check for spark. The new plastic one is some times hard to do this. Just put the plug wire on this plug and ground it with the clip. The long wire makes it easy to get to reach a good ground on the saw. Leave the original plug in and give the rope a crank. It works good and you will know for sure about fire. Sometimes a saw will have fire with the plug out and grounded, but will not fire under compression. This way you will know. I have bought the cheap plastic inline spark testers, but most are hard to see the spark inside them and fall apart pretty fast. This redneck tester is easy to and can be made in about 5 minutes. Everybody has 100's of good used plugs, wire and clips laying around don't they??? see.

Good info, and that's probably where I cocked up with my mobile phone batteries way back whenever.

Work Benches

Don't know if this fits in here perfectly but thought I'd share a few pics of the work bench(s) I recently made for my work shop. I'm a long way from getting the work shop organized the way I want it but these benches go a long way toward that end. Only one bench is shown here because it was the first completed and I wanted to document my progress.

I made them from scrap lumber left over from a couple construction projects. They are totally my design so I can't blame anyone else if they don't turn out to be functional but I like them. LOL I have since oiled them.

My shop shares my interests in chainsaws and wood working so I am constantly moving machines, workbenches etc to come up with a final plan that meets my needs. I hope to have some shelves up to display/store my saws better. Now they sit on the floor. It's a long term project.

-----
This photo shows the first bench before oiling. The bench to the right, in the corner, is a "scratch and dent" item from IKEA that makes good use of that space.

This second photo is a closer shot showing my unique design. LOL

great pictures you have shared with us! I really appreciate seeing those old tools that are still functioning like they did long ago.It seems that when they made tools back then there was no such thing as tool life or motor life, they just keep trucking along.Like the old safe as well!

Of course workbenches belong here, there tools in my opinion!what could we do without them.I would post a picture of the one I made but you wouldn't be able to see it, as it is covered in stuff, maybe one day soon.
Your bench looks great, very solid looking.
I see you have a Zyliss vise there, did we talk about that before when I was looking into a part for mine?Maybe it was blackoak.I'm looking for a place to buy the part that you can set one vise jaw into it and place it at any length from the other jaw, thus being able to place an item of any length in the vise.

I made this spark tester with an old plug and a foot of wire and a clip.

Nice tester. I made something similar with a slightly longer wire and 2 spring clips: one attaches to the spark plug, and the other to something metal (usually the muffler). With mine, the plug needs to be removed, but by the time I am checking for spark, I have already pulled the plug looking for fouling, damaged electrodes, etc.

Lawrence...Sorry about that I had even taken a pic of the part I thought you were looking for but never got it processed and posted.

Is this what you are looking for?

There are whole sets on eBay from $39 to $300. I have also seen single parts on there occasionally.

I was able to revive Wayne's xrp battery pack today!! Put it in the freezer for an hour and charge...tada, good as new. He was like "wow, thats cool".
Good tip.

That is great, now I feel relieved as it has worked well for others, at first I thought it just might be a fluke ,where it only worked for me.

7oaks,I thought it might have been you! Thanks for posting that picture for me.Okay I have that piece in the foreground of your picture. If that's the piece that enables you to place the one jaw at any length how does that jaw fit in to that piece?I have tried a couple of different ways but it doesn't seem to work.Man I must must dense!
Thanks

Cleaned out an old shed today and found some cool stuff. Found this old OILZUM 5 gal gas can. Also a broken off ball peen hammer (dont make them like this anymore) a 6" starett metal rule. I think someone else posted one just like it. Minus the hole in mine:censored:. Also a cool old "comet" lock.

Yeah I have a ruler like that. I think mine was a #604 though, without looking back. Though yours says #600 with #4 grads though, so maybe that's the same thing. It sure looks the same, other than the aforementioned hole. That's too bad.

What's worse is that I can't even find mine right now for the life of me! I need to clean up my workspace in the worst way though; chances are it's just buried under something and I'm not seeing it. I'm sure it hasn't left the property.

Regarding the hammer, I picked up a neat old claw hammer head the other day. The actual hammer part itself is just tapered out like a big cone from the section that attaches to the handle; it isn't rounded off at all. I've never seen anything like it and it does look fairly old. I thought of taking a pic, but then thought, well, it's just a friggin' hammer anyway... Might be of interest to someone though.

Post it, now I really want to see it!

freezer battery trick

Darn it, guys .........
I have two Ryobi 12 volt batteries that are dead and two that don't hold a charge worth a darn.
I want SO BAD to try out Jerry's trick, but I just looked and my freezer is full of food.
Of course it's an RV fridge and when one puts two pork chops and hamburger patty in it, it's full.
Guess I have to wait to try it out until after I decide to start eating again.
