I've been reading old threads for the last couple days and still can't make a decision on which saddle to buy.

The Traverse seems like a heavy duty saddle and I like the sliding dee's.I considered the Cougar and the Sequia also but can't make up my mind.

Any feedback on these saddles would be a huge help.

the Traverse is a great saddle.

personally,i would only buy the deluxe version.i like the buckles better and the extra padding makes a big difference.seems to have more attachment points as well.

If I decide on the Traverse,I will definitely spend the $30. extra for the deluxe.

Have you had any complaints with this saddle?

Thanks

Don't know how much the Traverse is and I am not getting paid to keep touting on about the Cougar ( which has a really gay name) but for under 300.00 with a bossun seat I don't think you could go any wronger. I have used this for a while now and its holds up, is adjustable and has a lot of places to stow gear.

So the legs straps are out of the question?

I have a cougar harness as well, but with the leg straps... love the attachment points for gear, and having a rope bridge makes laying horizontal much less awkward. The waist strap is very comfortable, nice and wide with lots of padding, the only thing I'd change is the leg straps... If your on a spurless climb, being suspended by those leg straps gets very uncomfortable (although they are nicer than some other leg strap style harness I've been in)... with a bosun seat I doubt I'd have any complaints though, for the price I'd say the cougar is well worth the money.

Sounds like I need a seat instead of straps.

Thanks for the reply.

not me personally no.

there are lighter saddles out there but it is a durable well thought out saddle.some guys don't like the D's.after all the bridge crap i have been going through i am considering going to the Traverse myself.the climber that owns the crane i hire loves his.

dealer here has two in stock .

I'm not to concerned about weight as long as it's comfortable.
I tried a Traverse several years ago but didn't move to far out on the limbs back then.I do remember the double dee's on the leather strap feeling very secure.
It's narrowed down to the Traverse or the Cougar with the seat.

I think anythig with legs straps is going to get ya in the yarbles eventually. The bossun seat reminds me of getting paddled in Chatholic School but since I never went to Chatholic School i don't know why that is. Its just a rigid padded board type deal that spreads the leg straps out away from the yarbles and is more comfy to sit down in.
I think I saw this Cougar at Penn Holo saw shop for 239.00. If you told them I sent ya they might look at you funny but they have the saddle.
Of all the high fuluting nonsense BS out there this saddle is not any of that. Of course the flimsy rope bridges they have been putting on a lot of saddles needs to be reckoned with. I put a piece of climbing line in there. I still use the original bridge to keep "stuff" on but not for life support.

Penn Holo is located in Skipack Pa.

I think its so funny to read about the cougar and how everyone is climbing on it when its a buckingham glide. There is no difference yet the glide has been out longer. The traverse is great if you don't like a lot of freedom when you climb. Its great to sit in for cabling, lightening protection, removals, but its junk for limb walking, climbing small trees, or trees with tight crotches like zelkovas, columnar maples, etc, thats more a function of the bossun seat than the saddle itself.

Thanks for the help.I think I'll go with the Cougar with the seat and just do as you did and replace the wimpy bridge with a short length of climbing line.

I don't know where you are at in jersey but if you get on 73 north it might only be a 2 hours to Penn Holo saw shop.

That just might be true.

If you do any work out of a bucket truck you can get the add on fall arrest suspenders for the Deluxe, I find it nice to only have one harness to get in an out of. Besides, in the bucket truck, I still have all the toys I climb with.

No bucket.

the weight isn't bad at all.

it does weigh more than my Butterfly. the Traverse Deluxe is an extremely comfortable saddle.

The Traverse is a great, bullet proof harness. It is ideal for nasty jobs like pines and palms and with the bosun seat is comfortable enough to use all day. It is also heavy, bulky and has a bridge which if it wears out cannot be replaced. I upgraded to a Sequoia for shorter climbs, pruning and love the difference in weight and flexibility it gives.

I buy my new climbers a Traverse to learn in because they are hard to break but if they buy something of their own later on thats cool too.
