I learned to climb 45 years ago. Climbing gear was cheaper back then.
Spikes cost $400+ because of insurance. Insurance for the manufacturer is expensive because of all the woul-be climbers that get critically injured or killed and the resulting lawsuits.
I climbed for my first couple of years in a "professional" saddle before replacing with a more well thought out saddle.
I'm now old and have nerve damage in my legs from using my 1st saddle which cut off circulation to my legs.

I bought mt best saddle from a manufacturer in Concord North Carolina, who made me a custom saddle. He was the owner and was selling his business at the time. He said he would not let the new owners make anything for him (or me) He did not trust them.
Later this new owner group made the harness for Dale Earnhardt that failed and cost him his life.

Before I retired, I became the "safety guy" for NAVFAC. I was very picky inspecting safety harness's. You should be too!
