Tree Climbing - Stressful or Relaxing

Been there........

but my new job sucks and is nothing but stress. we have a ground crew of 10 illegals and not 1 can run a rope every thing is rush rush rush. my boss is a low bidding a-hole and very cheep and disrespectful. he does not give x-mass bonus. all the ropes are trash. we have 50+ saws and not 1 good bar/chain. safety is out the window. he wants stumps cut flush 2 the ground. no flat file. 2 broken t wrenches so we use that with an adj wrench. the guys think sharpening a chain means cut the raker's off. owner knows nothing about trees. always taking down nice healthy large removals at a price lower than any other company around.that is most likely why work is plentiful. i do like his trucks and grinder brand new rj 90 4x4 ,new 65ft altec bkt international diesel2 new huge chip trucks 2 newer but beat 250 bb chippers and 1 22ton crane i think he buys cheep towing recovery eye n eye straps :monkey: i realy need a new local fair paying job asap with a crane bkt truck and good equipment would be nice but with winter here its not looking real good. do u think in looking 4 2 much? let me know.

Try taking some time off to get certified or a degree or something. I use to get super stressed every winter. Got fed up with having to work for someone else, went back to school, got a job I love. You may have to sacrifice some things to get there but it will be worth it

I bid a pruning contract for the city of Newton this fall, that was scheduled to be executed this winter, although a nice winter income would have been good for business, I'm actually kind of glad we didn't get the job! Now I can focus on studying for the MCA exam this spring.

Depends on the day and situation.

The job can sometimes be very stressful. However I can be fuming mad about something before I go up the tree... pissed to no end. Once I get up those first few feet though my mind becomes clear. Anything I was stressed out about just disappears.

I've got to agree with Matt(Happy Holidays by the way) the mental focus I have when climbing kind of clears my mind of stressful thoughts. I find most of the stress is before I get into the tree. We have a large contract with a college that has 70 plus mature amer. Elms to deadwood to 1" and crown reduce 10 percent. After being there 3 weeks I dread climbing those wide SOB's.

Corey, long time no see. How are things treating you at TCOT? BTW, if you need to get rid of wood ever, I have a guy down in Briarcliff who wants wood. A little too far south for me, but might be alright for you.

I guess it would be a mix between both for me it just depends on where I am at and what tree I am cutting down.

I say 50-50 A few of us get the real sketchey stuff while others walk away. My most relaxing days are when I am working by my self running a foresty mower or a shear.

I put down 50/50, but it is not completely accurate, a none of the above would be where I lie.

Do I find tree work stressful?.....no. Do I find it relaxing?.....no.

I enjoy working outside and the physical work and the small personal rewards that come along with doing a large removal or cabling and bracing a tree back together etc.

On the other side of the coin there are trees that just stress me right out. Dead trees, large cavities, some emergency jobs, sometimes makes me wonder what the heck I am doing up here. These kind of jobs are becoming much fewer and far between now that I'm a little older and wiser. My need for adrenaline rushes has been replaced with just making sure I get home.

A cold beer after work= relaxing
A hot shower after cold rainy day= relaxing

Dreading my daughter becoming a teenager= stressful
Picturing my son climbing trees= stressful

Climbing trees=satisfying

It all depends on what is in front of you and who is behind you.....

I love to climb..... How ever when doing utility work and they want yo to climb 25-30 trees a day...... It can be really stressful. The practice of climbing trees is realy relaxing......

Boy that brings back memories-and one of my biggest pet peeves. Unspoken rule when working a line-you get done with a tree, you climb the next one that needs doing. No skipping trees. But it would be funny, get a big ugly climb and suddenly every climber has to sharpen his saw, switch the ends on his rope, sharpen his spikes, etc. Just waste enough time for another climber to get to it. Piss me off every time.

But you got to admit, climbing that many trees a day piles up the experience quick. Lucky these days if I'm up four a day.

I truly love climbing and then to get paid for it makes it that much better for me. The only time it stresses me is when I come into bees or a family of racoons. I also work for myself and go at my own pace and take only the jobs I want

I'm not sure if I would call it stressful or relaxing,but when I am in a tree,there is absolutely nothing on my mind except for the job at hand.I've always been able to keep cool when things aren't going well or when I'm taking out a huge water oak in between an electrical transformer and a house.I love what I do so I guess I would have to lean more towards relaxing.

I find it very relaxing to attain total concentration on the job at hand. Might be a bit backwards, but the more difficult the job (rigging etc.) the more settled down I am.
Also, the bosses, homeowners, etc. are not trying to stress me out while I'm up and out of easy hearing range.
