I don't know tulip poplar but I do know basswood and I don't think it's basswood. Basswood looks like ash with the diamond shape on bark but flatter peaks and very grey. Also it shouldn't turn that brown on the ends. Look at picture 4 in the post I quoted. No diamond pattern at all.

Do know tulip and positive that is not it. Other than that, not sure. Just my 1\2 pence!
 
Another thing I notice about basswood is that when cut green, it will throw a white powder all over the place that sticks to your clothes. No big deal, but that's how it behaves. My real squawk is that it when it dries out, it has one of the lowest heat contents per pound of any domestic hardwood and burns like lightning. Like I said earlier--great for campfires.
