I am looking for a good Stihl dealership in the Northern Virginia area, primarily for service. I also frequent the Shenandoah Valley and if someone has a good dealer that has good techs, I would be pleased to know where to go. Also does anyone have a contact at Mid-Atlantic Stihl that they would be willing to share? Please feel free to pm me. Thanks for your help.

The man you want to see is the King Himself, Tom Hall. He's in He's the saw guy at TW Perry in Leesburg. Tom is top notch, first rate, good man. Well respected here on AS. But don't tell him I said that. He's also ugly, and you CAN tell him I said that! :D

I don't know of a good Stihl dealer in the Valley. There are a ton of small dealers around here, but I just don't know if they are any good or not.

Miller's Hardware in Stephen's City MIGHT be good. They used to sell just saws, with no servicing. However, since they moved to their new location, they seem to have a full time tech. I chatted with the manager late one evening about saws, and he seemed to know his stuff, and spoke highly of his tech. Well, of course, he would, but still , he did seem to know saws.

One place to avoid like the PLAGUE is Grand Rental Station on Route 7 in Winchester. They think they are doing you a favor to acknowledge your presence, and they don't know beans about saws. They rented me an 029 with a dull chain and summer weight bar oil in it, when the temps were in the low 30s. At least, they did after they deigned to notice my presence.

The John Deere dealership across the street from them does sell and service saws. Good people. I've had my Echo serviced there. I don't know if they've picked up the Stihl line, now that JD dealers have access to it. If they have, and are servicing them, they'd probably be a good choice.

There's also a place in downtown Front Royal. They're pretty grumpy. Dunno if they know a hill of beans or not.

Welcome to the site!

Why not just use the stihlusa web site? You should be able to locate the nearest dealer to your location. I think they also do some rating “gold star” or “factor certified’ something or other. Service should be the same or at least similar at the rated shops. Why drive 100 miles out of your way for service?? Most stuff you can do yourself or someone here can walk you through it. I am the mayor of simpleton and even I can fix a chainsaw. It’s a two stroke, not the space shuttle. Poste upe with das problems and see if someone can give you a hand or at least tell you that your problem requires dealer service.

Thanks for this information. TW Perry in Leesburg is 30 minutes from my house. I was going to go check out Jamie's Small Engine Repair in Lovettsville. That's about 15 minutes away. I'd rather drive the extra time for known good service.

Go see Tom Hall in Leesburg, he's a Stihl Tech, you will be in for a treat, beside great customer service, you'll be in for a treat, where else can you find a grown man stuck in a time warp with the exception of the craving for Wendy's #7's. You'll get to listen to Elvis, see a real vitalis or brylcream hairdo and if your lucky he'll let you buy him a cold pepsi.
On top of all that your Stihl will get cared for like a grandchild.

they aren't telling you the whole story on ole tom the elvis impersonator......

if you are buying a new saw you must ask for a discount to get one.

if you are servicing an old saw make sure you drain the 3-year old gas out first or be prepared for a tounge lashing.

preferential treatment requires the purchasing (for tom) of said wendy's meal.

tom washes down said wendys meal with tepid folgers from a dirty mason jar.

homage to 'the king' must be paid upon entering tom's tiny elvis shrine of a shop.

never mention the fact that 'mr. stihl' himself is using a big, honking HUSKY toolbox.

the movie 'oh brother where art thou' will likely be playing on the small t.v. in the corner. it is on permanent loop in the stihl shop. if tom invites you over to the showroom (nextdoor to the workshop) ask him to hold on a sec because this is your favorite part of the movie (doesn't matter what part).

if you are invited in to the 'back room' by all means go....
but whatch out if he's carrying a tube of bryl cream.

Shenk's Rusco Window Co in Front Royal if your down a bit farther.

Thanks for everyones advice. I'm stopping off today around 2:00 pm with a 028 Frankensaw I need him to look at. I'm going to buy a new Stihl bar and chain for it also. So to get this straight .....

Bring Wendy's #7 chicken breast meal

Cold Pepsi

Let him know that I've seen Elvis's "Blue Hawaii" (1961) movie at least 20 times.

Don't ask for a free chain sharpening

Pack a gat in case the backroom/Brykcream thing is more than just viscious rumor.

Guys,

Thank you very much. This is just the information I was looking for. I appreciate you sharing it. Have a great day.

If you ever end up further down the Valley,

Schrock Saw and Tool in Harrisonburg is where I go and am always well taken care of.

Cool story -

The first time I took my 028 in there for general service, it was brought back out by this older mennonite lady (maybe a relation to Schrock the owner - this is mennonite country) who apparently works in the repair shop as she was wearing a heavy leather apron. Anyways, this lady was just as pleasant and nice as can be, however her hands were unreal - hands like my dad - hands that you only get after a lifetime of hard work and labor - complete with various scars and missing the end of at least one digit. Looked like she could crush walnuts between her thumb and forefinger.

If you wish, I can stop by there on my way home from work...I'll take a York peppermint patty/Diet Pepsi...
