Como, and anyone else for that matter - if you choose not to wear earplugs, that's your choice. Just be aware that even stock saws pump out 100Db, which can put a hurt on your ears in a short time. Ever have a ringing in your ears? It's a sign of damage, and it'll only get worse.

Some people won't wear em because they think they won't be able to hear something going wrong. Ask someone who wears them all the time and they'll tell you that's not the case at all.

Even a splitter motor is well into the 80+Db range, enough to cause damage over a long period. Ear damage is a function of volume x time - the longer you're exposed, the less loud it needs to be to cause damage.

I wish I knew now what I didn't know back in my indestructible youth.

You have me intrigued as to the noise level from my saw. I am susceptible to noise and will easily get a headache. Never noticed it with a chainsaw, or my strimmer, or my splitter or my power washer. Or my ATV or Motorbike. Makes me wonder which is the loudest.

I have protection for shooting, it will be a month or so before I get back into serious cutting, something to bear in mind.

Ahhh tinnitus, I just about jumped off a building from the constant ringing when it first started, now its just back ground noise, but it is still maddening and I do miss the silence.

I think the most dangerous part of cutting off a pile of logs ( for an experienced Saw operator ) is getting the logs off the pile. The safest way for me is start pulling from the top with a tractor and chain. JMO

I nearly bought some shin guards, bruising from logs banging my legs can get annoying.

So, do you continue to not use hearing protection or did you wise up and start using it?

HUH? I use it now I don't start the saw, mower or snowblower unless I have hearing protection on. It's so loud sometimes that if you guys get close enough to your computers you could hear the ringing in my ears.

My snowblower is the worst probably followed by my splitter as far as a noise that just gets to you real quick without hearing protection.

My cutting equipment, foam ear plugs, safety glasses, cheap leather gloves, ice fishing spud bar to pry logs, hookaroon, maul, speeco 28 ton splitter, 372XP, and 350. Cut away.
