What have you picked up from AS that has helped you become more mechanical, knowledgible, productive in what you do.
Has it become more than a hobby?

In my case I have picked many ideas and troubleshooting techniques from many users as well as web-friends.

I have gone from taking my saws to the dealer to have repaired and mailing off saws to get modded to repairing everything on my own and completly modding all my own stuff.
I have gone from muffler mods and after market air systems to - milling, porting and building.

I have gone from one winter of being bored to this one where I have built six saws from basically old crappers that are now half new and will now make any faller happy.

I have gone from pissin' people off at home to the world wide web and in that same sense, have been able to share what I know about my trade.

Whats your experience?

I have learned that most people on this board are so f:censored:ing quick to s:censored:it on someone for wanting anything less than an MS 361 or anything not in the Husqvarna 300 series.

The coolest thing I have learned from this site is using newspaper and ash to clean creosote off of stove glass.

I have learned

1. That 99.9% will bust their tail to help you solve a problem or find a part.
2. They will feed an addiction to chainsaws
3. If it ant a Stihl or a Husky they don't want it.
4. I would rather have a Dolmar, or Echo than any one of them.
5. I'm nuts anyway because I love old Remington's.

What have I learned? Well, I knew my saws and how to maintain them pretty well but I learned how to think outside of my little box on this site. To me a saw was a firewood saw and that meant a 60CC saw. Carried the darned thing to the limbs and suffered through the realy big stuff with the same saw, didnt know any better. Then one guy on here said "ya, my 066 weights a ton but I dont have to hold it near as long ans your little peewee saws" and he got me to think'en. We now have several bigg'ens and you wanna see a pick up truck fill fast with firewood? Gimmie the butt end of a big tree, the 660, the 757 and two boys to help,, yee haw! LOL. I never wanted to mess with my saw motors either but now we drill out the muffs and rid them of the piston scoring jet stops before they go to the woods.

Gone from running stock saws fixed by someone else to now having at least one with a duel port muffler and am rebuilding an 064. Very generous people with their knowladge and experience. I had only heard of race saws and stock saws but now know about woods porting.

Same here. All but the 064. Muffler modded my 046 and it rocks!!! A little loud but real ballsy.

I've learned a lot ... from 'how to properly adjust/tune a carb', muffler mods (lol), what different types of chains are for, how to troubleshoot with shortcuts, people help you out with IPL's, ... really good forums for chainsaws!! There's a lot of really opinionated people on here but when it comes down to helping you out, most people try to do so.

Pretty much everything above said and this wierd little "BUG".
But that's okay cuz ya' see the ol' Doc gave me a hand full of these little pills and I can pee again. Yee Haw !!!

What I've learned:
1. danp76 will probably never post here again :jester:

2.Stan (441_Stihl) really,really,loves his saw

3.saw troll seems to know every fact about almost any saw built :jawdrop:

4.there's a bunch of crazies here(myself included) that love chainsaws and will do almost anything to help one another fuel this passion

In the short time I've been here, I've learned a lot about saws and their upkeep, biggest one being that without a properly sharpened chain, everything else is useless.

Also, that I should have bought a 361 (or 440) instead of the 290.

Learning

Short time on the site and have gathered enough info to give me a headache and eye strain. Maybe the hours I spend pulling up different posts is the problem.

What I have gleamed:

If there's one way to do something there are a dozen, all effective

That I was not really happy with a stock saw and must now mod them

That I was not really happy with two saws but must now get a dozen or so

That there is a plethora of information out there and the knowledgeable ones are more than willing to share.

That if I ever have problems I know where to come to get answers

Thanks for the answers folks

Answer this one for me, where am I going to get the green backs for these mods and new saws?

Later,

Fred

An 046BB, 346xp, 192t, climbing saddle, rope, lanyard, misc. climbing gear, and old Mall, a cheap grinder, more files than I know what to do with, more chains than I know what to do with, the balls not to be afraid to tear into and mod a 346xp if you are not happy with it. Oh, and the nastiest home built splitter you have ever seen!

Since I believe I know everything, and the world is full of idiots until I'm proven wrong... I learned to be more insulting and less compassionate.:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

Actually a lot of the tech stuff that Lakeside53 has posted here has been the most beneficial to me. Since he is used to what most West Coast guys need and are lookin' for. But that's just me bein' selfish.:help:

Mostly, I've learned how to spend more money than I used to and hide it better from my wife...

The members here make this site what it is. Thanks for All the information you guys contribute!

I also loved tootall's post! HILARIOUS!

A lot of stuff, most of it good. Great technical advice from Lakeside and several others. Falling techniques from guys that are still in the woods doing it...and still learning themselves. A glimpse into what logging is like in other parts of the country . Other parts of the world, too. A new appreciation for what arborists go through just to make a living. Exposure to new ideas and different attitudes....some good and some not. Exposure to a whole village of new people...mostly good. And even from the idiots I've learned something. I've made friends here, most of whom I'll probably never meet but I still benefit from their council and their willingness to share what they know. What little I know about anything I share with them. I've been appauded when I was right and slammed when I was wrong....and I've done the same to others. I like this place. If I didn't I wouldn't be here.
