Hey guys, I found a new 288xp, made in 1995. Only recently fueled up and 1 test cut made to ensure saw is in running condition. What would the value of such a saw be?

Also, I think I have read certain year models had rubber AV and others had springs - does anyone know the specifics on this? Or was it a mix & match?

Thanks,

Waylan

I would pay $450 if it's new as you say it is, might be worth more in different markets.

you can try ebay complete listing to see what others have paid for them.

any bar and chain included?

$450 HA! I have seen well used, paint missing normal logger use 288xp go for $450. Yes I read here yesterday that a NOS 288 went for $1800!!!! I should probably put my very low hr 288xp back together. ALL original OEM and just a little paint missing from the case.........

That thing is worthless. PM me this guys phone number so I can call him and give this guy a talkin to about trying to pass off his problems on someone else. Some people. :tongue2:

If your saw was made in 1995 it would have been built based on the 1993-09 spec. That spec used a combination of both springs and rubber mounts. Is is an XP or a 'Lite' version?

It is an XP, not a lite. Comes with a new 20" Husky bar + chain. I already have a 28" tech lite bar and a 28" oregon reduced weight, and chain to put on it - probably use the 20" as a spare on my 372xp.

I see them well used on ebay and CL listed for $350 to $650 - and many times the ads state just rebuilt (which to me means it has seen a fair amount of use or abuse. Anyway, I snagged it for $800 plus shipping ($50). I would have rather been the first to fuel it up, but it was not going to be a shelf queen anyway, so 1 cut does not bother me. Been on the lookout a while for a mint one but just hard to find IMO. It was higher than I wanted to pay but to have it essentially "new" was more than I could pass up.

Regarding the mounts - can the rubber mounts be changed out so that it is all spring mount, and does this help the antivibe? Anyone have an IPL?

About to do some forum searching on muffler mod suggestions.

Any other tips or things I should be aware of?

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

I was gonna say what I would pay earlier but was holding out for more of the story. For one on it's first tank, I'd spend 800-1000 any day. It's one of my favorites. Here on AS you will see used 372, 460, 440, 441 for $700 or more and I assure you that a 288 will humilate any of those models (as it should per CC's) so for $800 you got a great saw...maybe not the greatest deal but a great saw worth the money none the less.

we are in two very different markets, for $600 I could get a 390XP walkerized or simonized

$800 although is a lot of money, kinda is a "you suck" price. For that price id be looking over my shoulder or on the bottom of the saw for the made in china sticker. Nice score.

One guy on here just paid $600 for a nos ms200 . :msp_scared:
So , that should make an almost nos 288 worth at least $1800 :chainsawguy:

Um.... we are gonna need to see pics of that saw when it arrives. Mine is very clean but I have never seen a new one.:msp_wub: I look forward to your visual contribution to your thread.

Will definitely post pics when it arrives. I am thinking it should get here Thursday or Friday - it is shipping out tomorrow from California and I am in north Louisiana.

Tim, thanks for the IPL!

Thanks for all the info and comments guys.......

Well it came in. I'll try to post some photos - never have before so might not get it right.

I still think I did good, but I did notice a few flaws - paint chip near oiler fill, recoil slightly different color than rest of saw, couple handling marks, some very light surface rust on muffler, some screw heads have a little surface rust.

I fired it up just fine - had to turn adjust idle speed to keep make it idle, otherwise runs fine. I looked the carb over and it doesn't look like it is governed which is good IMO. Has all spring mounts. One thing I did notice is that there are no mounts at the front of the handle - just the big spring out front. Is this typical?

I know some guys would say just shelf it, but I don't plan to sell and I don't have any shelf queens - but when possible I do enjoy starting with a new saw. I take care of my stuff, so other than getting some sawdust and oil here and there it will stay in good shape so long as no accidents. It's heavier than my 440 and 372, but not as much as I thought. It seems slim for it's size. Vibes don't seem terrible - not that much different than my 440.

What should compression be on it in new condition?

Enough with my observations and questions - let's see if I can get some pics uploaded.

Sorry the pics aren't the best. I think Brad Snelling's pics are always super - perfect setting, light, background, etc.

I had a brand new 28" tech lite bar and chain I threw on it and made a couple test cuts. I'll see if I can take some more and better pics and post them up.

One thing I noticed is that the exhaust deflects up and stains the top cover. I already removed the spark arrestor, and plan to turn the front deflector around and remove the baffle that is just inside of it. Is there an easy way to bend the front deflector without mashing it up (it is bent to contour the muffler - one ear will need straightened and the other will need bent).

One last thing - it came from Virginia - not California. I don't know what I was thinking saying it came from Cali..

Ok, got some better pics. One pic is to show light surface rust on muffler. I cut this tree down last weekend with other saws - just used the 288xp to cut a couple cookies off the top of the stump. Oil and sawdust on front of saw is from those two cuts.

Did you get this saw off of ebay? There was one I was watching last week....

Oh to get my hands on that little beauty. For the power that 288 makes the weight won't bother u. I hossed mine all over a mountain side on a clearing job out on my friends property. Ain't nothing like a 288 filling a holler with sound.
