Yes, that's the one. He had his phone number in the listing so I texted and asked if he was interested in a buy-it-now price and we struck a deal.

Is that bad for me to have done that?

Made a little progress on the muffler tonight - I removed the front deflector and re-bent it to fit facing forward, and trimmed out the tab that was protruding into the muffler. Actually, once I put the deflector on I saw that I could trim out a little more under that front deflector. Washed the muffler out real well, put in oven to dry, and reassembled. Had to start it up just to listen - real nice!!!!

While I had it off I took a glance at the piston through the exhaust port and plug hole - looks new (I don't know what I was expecting, lol).

One of the muffler bolts was not real tight when I was taking it off, so I checked all bolts I could access afterwards and everything else felt tight.

Alright, I'll quit boring everybody :).

we are in two very different markets, for $600 I could get a 390XP walkerized or simonized

Yes we are, but I was referring to ebay USA, not Aus. And a 390xp is not a 288xp, and no I am not comparing them in any way. While the 288 still are tecnically made (brazil) they are basicly considered discontinued. Go out right now and buy a 288xp in new condition for $600 and you will turn a profit every day of the week, fact!

BTW having one "walkerized" doesnt add any value in my books....

I would be very tempted by an $800 288!!!! One of my all time favorite saws!!

I build 288's to resell all the time as well and get $500-$550, so $800 for a new one sounds very reasonable. Besides, it doesn't have to sound reasonable...It's a NEW 288!!! you can't go down to the corner store and get one!:)

Some would say keep it new, but what the heck. They were made to cut wood.:greenchainsaw:

are ya gonna mod it or ?

find a 2100 crank. dome the piston. dual port the muffler, polish the carb.,and for "goshsakes" Put an Eliminator(big air cleaner)on it. But what a good score. Maybe better to stay all nostalgic, NOT!!!

:agree2:

you better have another look...the governor on my 288 was hiding...

:yoyo:

Yeah the governor on these HS carbs is quite hidden when on a 288XP. It'll be on the right side of the carb body near the choke arm (and is often covered with a layer of saw cake). Not all of the HS carbs on 288's have the governor, but most seem to. I see that this 288XP has a comp release, which makes it one of the later ones. That does increase the chance that it doesn't have a governor. My 288XP has one (that was hidden by saw cake).......and it's getting blocked off this afternoon.

 title says it all:blob2:

Disable the governor? It's easy. You'll have to remove the carb to do it though.

-Use a 1/4" gasket punch to cut a disc of aluminum from a beer can.

-Unscrew the governor body from the carb (use a good hollow ground screwdriver that fits the slot...........as that bugger is really in there and likes to strip out before turning).

-Drop the aluminum disc in the hole, put some sealant on the governor body threads (I use Indian Head shelac or Permatex Hi-Tac), being sure to not get any sealer on the reduced diameter section of the gov body where the side ports are.

-Thread the gov body back into the carb and tighten.

-Tune the carburetor as usual. Make SURE that it 'four strokes' at WOT unloaded, and JUST cleans up when under load in the cut (and drops right back to 'four stroking' when you lift the cutting pressure).

Some folks use a welch plug from an RK-23HS carb kit instead of the aluminum can disc. If you do that, be sure the domed side of the welch plug faces up when you drop it in the gov hole in the carb body.

Thanks for all the replies.

Noticed something messing with the saw - with the oil tank full or close to full, it seems alot of oil comes out the oil vent on the top of the tank. Oil vent looks like sintered bronze or similar material. Is it normal for it to leak a good amount there or is this one faulty?

Anything I can do to make it not leak so much?

what does adding a 2100 crank do?

I believe it gives a longer stroke. Was doing a search on this forum about building a 394xp and came across it. Will see if i can look it up and post it here. Never tried it anything past a muffler mod myself. Am purely just learning and having fun.:msp_biggrin: It had some thing to do w/ getting around a big bore kit w/ the 2100 crank instead.Something to do w/ pop-up pistons, also.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMXpJe_2OsgI will try to find the one that says what can be done using the 288xp:popcorn:

Husqvarna 395 XP Big Bore + Bigger Crankshaft = 106 cc's (phase 2) - YouTubeI will try to find the one that says what can be done using the 288xp:popcorn:[/QUOTE]

anything can be down given time and either skill or money, but saying through a 2100 crank in there is a little missleading.

That's why it is wise to ask. I think w/ the parts i have available in281/288/ 2100/2101 baskets and the parts i found through links to this site I'd be better to restore these saws to original. Maybe even trade one or two to get some serious mod work done. HMmmm:confused2:
