I drove by neighbor with ladder up in tree and all the limbs trimmed as high as his pole saw would go. I stopped and asked if he'd like me to top it for him and he said no but if you just want to drop it you can. I drove home got my saw and dropped it. I told him I'd have felt terrible if I didn't stop and learned he had gotten hurt.

Silk, that rocks. I see people riding those in the Banff Film Fest video

When I do work FOR charities they get my groundie at cost and me less 15%.
I would like to do more for free, but being self employed my time is my money earning source.
There is a lot of work to be done, but I do have to 'compete' against the retired/semi retired folks who have healthy bank accounts, a poulan and free time. I hope no-one gets hurt...
A lady asked me to trim some palm fronds round her house, they were blocking the security light...I found out later she's been stalked...I did that one for free.

I help alot of people, its a habit of mine that gets me in trouble with my wife alot, but its that farming family background thing, cant help it.

A month ago I drove passed an old guy working solo on a steep hillside above a road bucking up a pine that was obviously a bit of a trap for new players.

I drove on a bit then my conscience got the better of me so I turned around and offered to help. He refused. I asked him what his plan was if the tree rolls and he gets pinned and then told him it would take me no time at all to get the tree more settled for him to cut up.

He refused

I then told him I was from a farming family and lived only a couple Kms away and by farming standards that makes him a neighbour, and neighbours help each other out where they can. And theres bound to be something he could help me out in the future. He accepted so I helped get the log down and bucked up and then sharpened his saw.

What did I get? A kiss on the cheek from his very worried wife when I helped him take some of the wood back to his place in my truck.

A good deal I think.
That's a nice story right there.

I took down a 32" sugar maple that an elderly woman was worried about in front of her house. It was between and over the house, house drop, and a little over the street lines. We took it down took the firewood to a needy neighbor chipped and cleaned up for $500. Took over a day. Another time I got a little kids cat out of a tree in the rain. The mother came out of the house afterwards with what looked like every dollar she could find. Ones fives and tens. I told her I was happy to help out and if she ever needed tree work to give me a call..... And many others...... Mike

The district of North Vancouver has given a group of us trail workers Permits to work on the mountain for the last 5 years or so to take care of these things on a volunteer basis.

The only requirement is that we stay within WCB work place safety standards and have 3rd party liability insurance.

It works well for everyone involved as it saves the tax payers in the District money they would have to spend to have this done. And it provides a real sense of pride for the people involved in the upkeep of the trails.

Here are some pictures of the Mountain bike trail that I am responsible for. I finished building this over the last month with my free time.

All done with hand tools, around 100' long total.

I Td'ed this big honey locust for The Great Valley Nature Center that was ready to take out the syrup shed and give them split wood from time to time. They have some bald eagles up there.
I worked for Fairmont Park planting trees and civic duties, trail restoration and user education
I donate fund to variuos non-profit tree/envirnment groups
I am now in the process of "defaming" the township's parks dept for the havoc they are wreaking on the new plantings which I said I would fix. Man, they made quite a mess and when I take my kid there I just can't help it. And I want a plaque now.

total cost for these services? 0
sum of deduction at tax time? Geez, I am a ham.
