If you can find their tree stands, set out a couple paintball land mines and fill them with UV tracking powder, deer urine, itching powder or whatever seems appropriate. Maybe some indelible dye as you would find in bank bag pods. Make sure you put signs all around the base of the tree stand indicating that who ever is hunting there is trespassing too.
Maybe put some of that UV tracking powder around and on the signs on the property line. It would be pretty easy to identify the people once they track through it and grab a sign.

1). If adding Arduino to propane cannon is your kind of thing; skip it and build a hail cannon with an IR tripwire and sell it to farmers trying to keep deer out. You will be rich. Take my money!!!

2) Airsoft landmines. Never heard of such things but I going to venture down an internet search.

3). Human hair has been my most effective deer deterrent. Unsuccessful hunters leave to find successful places.

4) Rangar Benson has a book "Survival Poaching" (it's banned and buying it will probably put you on a list). The understanding of the Poaching mentally is true Sun Zue "know your enemy".

No one seems to have considered using a drone for making observations.
I don't know what the security budget is, but a good drone can be excellent for making observations undetected by the folks you want to catch.

With a bit of practice and a good drone, you can program a decent drone to make a pre-planned flight and record it all. They are excellent at spotting vehicles or larger objects on large acreage, and 450 acres is a LOT of ground to patrol on a regular basis. If you have a really big budget, get one with a FLIR camera, and you can easily spot & track a human in the dark of early morning, and then tell the cops exactly where they are hiding. A hot engine on a vehicle would stand out like a sore thumb.

The legal limit for maximum altitude in the USA is 400 feet above ground level. That is so high that the drones become invisible and nearly impossible to hear, also. I have a very hard time spotting my DJI Phantom 4 even when I am operating it. The little tell-tale lights can all be turned off, and the newer drones are even coming out with stealth propellers that don't make as much noise. It has an easy 1/2 mile operating range, and I've seen videos of guys operating their birds from miles away. That will certainly cover 450 acres.

I can program my drone to take a planned flight pattern, but I still retain control of where the camera is aiming. So it will cover all the ground while I focus on looking around. This is particularly useful if you wish to make regular patrols, but don't wish to lose a lot of time doing it. If I see something of interest, it is easy to just take control of the drone and fly in closer for a better look.

With respect to trespassers: nothing keeps 'em out like the probability of getting caught. Diligence and effectiveness are key here. I'm guessing that the probability of getting caught is low, so they are willing to take the risk.

I'm on it with the drone. Can be written off as a farm expense anyway and Ill order it first of the year. And the FLIR. I have 10 months to come up with a strategy, and/or be practiced on using that thing.
So sad to hear. Is there any possibility that your dog was hit by a train? If it is the neighbors, that's low, really low. I hope you have involved the police and have pictures to back it up.

Sorry again. You're taking it much better than I would. My face would have been in the news already.
My dog was hit by the train at some point. Marks and amputation on his legs speak to it.

Problem with that being the primary cause of death is that I stood on the site where I found the body and walked over it three separate times since he went missing. then the body appears after exactly zero sightings despite an $8k reward. I’m supposed to believe he went down to the track that day and got hit after hearing a close shot and two/three dogs returning pel Mel. He was supposedly there on the track from the get go with absolutely no ounce of flesh consumed by wild animals whereas a turkey hit on the tracks a couple days ago had bones that were essentially picked clean, chewed up and scattered. Also, body had very little decomposition, barely had a smell compared to the batch of roosters I processed a week after the dog went missing. Like he was refrigerated in a cooler for some time. Law enforcement? They want nothing to do with a case like this. Nothing to take to court as they say. Nothing clear. No witnesses to what they want to believe was an accident.

Its been two pretty dark days. Everyone is a mess. I’m trying to get back on the horse.

objectively speaking I don’t have proof that my neighbors did it. I just have my suspicions based on trespassing and poaching incidents prior and after the dog’s disappearance. All I can do is get busy and be prepared with a good defense game for whatever unpleasantness comes next. If none, be ready for next deer season.

a new puppy gets delivered Thursday or Friday. Best I could do to hopefully get the family looking forward instead of back.

Thanks to all of you for your support.

The poachers think this is all a game. On several occasions they left me a cold freshly cracked beer when they are out at the same time I’m trying to catch them and see me coming. No more of that, given how things have turned. Sensors, cameras, and drones from here on. I don’t want to be looked at through a scope any more than I already have.

I don’t want to give even a fingernail hold of impropriety on my part as that would likely become the focus, especially if connections of theirs extend to law enforcement or prosecution. Proceeding very carefully.

Tracking powder on decoy cameras l, real cameras and signs etc is a great idea. It has been added to my list. Thanks.

IR sensor or perhaps a dual beam sensor tied to an action for deer deterrent is straight forward. I’ll report back on such a setup if you are interested. The more difficult part is that One must be very careful (to design in safeguards) to prevent a human from accidentally setting it off and getting injured or worse. Lawyers dream about cases like that.

human hair as a deer deterrent or to change movement is a good idea. I wonder what the regulations are on acquiring that from hairdressers. Groan. It’s going on my list anyway. Thanks.

Carefully collect the cans/bottles get LE to dust it for prints. Chances are they've been printed sometime. take pictures to document where and when you found them. If if they are not on record it will make a stronger case when you do catch them and they get printed. For that matter you could also print any stands you find.

Also if you want to screw with them, go to a fast food place and get a few buckets of fryalator fat. Dump that around the stand, won't attract deer but will predators squirrels, and noisy crows

I have put up with poachers/trespassers, wood thieves, and people who dump their trash on my properties.

When I was a teen, I'd ask the trespassers to leave. Most did without trouble. Hunters would ignore, tear down or blow my no trespassing private property signs off of the trees they were posted on. Way back then it was required that your property be posted to keep hunters out. Now the hunter must have signed permission from the land owner in their possession. The permission is good for one day. While this sounds like a solution to hunters trespassing, it has literally done nothing.

The best solution for hunters trespassing is to call a tow company and have their vehicle towed from my property. This costs them a minimum of $300, plus any storage fee. Word gets around fast, and suddenly people that have "hunted this land their whole life" find elsewhere to hunt. Ditto for hunters that tell me that they own the land or are caretakers of the land.

One guy, a retired state cop posted hundreds of acres, like 400 or 500 acres, with his name, and told people that he was the designated caretaker of the property. Did this for the past 25 or more years. He wasn't, and now spotlighting deer at night has stopped completely.

One particularly crafty hunter drove to the middle of my one plot of land and cut saplings to cover his truck. MY saplings. I thoughtfully removed all of the lug nuts on his truck wheels. He started the truck at the end of the day of hunting and made it all of 10 feet before the first rim fell off. The other three soon followed. That cost him $1200 to get lifted up, new lug nuts installed and to be towed out.

A few years ago I wake up to find 4 pickup trucks in my back yard. Being deer season, I call the tow company. The truck shows up, tows two trucks and is hooking up the third when the "hunters" come out of the woods. Upset by their vehicles being towed, they call the game warden and the police. The police show up first, I explain what I did and what they did. One guy gets very upset and says he has written permission from the land owner to hunt there, and I am not the land owner.

The cop asks to see the permission. The hunter reaches in his pocket, pulls out a handkerchief, which he drops. When the hunter picks up the handkerchief, a baggie with about a half ounce of pot falls out. The hunter is arrested. While the cop is writing up the paperwork, the game warden arrives. He is given the "we have permission from the land owner to hunt here" line. He asks to see the permission, which no one has. He asks the name of the land owner, and is given a name I've never heard. I show the cop and game warden my property tax bill and my drivers license, proving my ownership.

The game warden asks if everyone's shotgun is empty. The answer is a resounding 'no'. He tells everyone to empty their weapons, and they do so. 5 or 6 shells are shucked on the ground in front of each hunter. Automatic fine, limit is 3 rounds for deer season. Everyone gets a fine for over capacity and a fine for hunting on private property without permission. They may have lost their hunting license for a year or more for hunting private property without permission.

When people dump trash, I rifle thru the trash until I find a utility bill or something with a name and address on it. I call the person and tell them that I want them to remove the trash from my property. No one ever knows how the trash got there, because THEY didn't put it there.

A call to the EPA solves the problem. The EPA cleans up the mess and sends the owner of the trash the bill. I believe the average cost of cleanup is around $200 to $300. One unfortunate soul was hit with a bill in the thousands. I had him on a game camera dumping the trash, draining his oil from his truck on the ground and then giving the camera the finger. Evidently it is fun to do an oil change on your vehicle in the middle of the woods with no drain pan. The EPA went insane when they saw the tape.

Wood thieves are a breed of their own. "You're not using the wood, it's standing dead wood anyway." I guess standing dead trees a few hundred yards off of the nearest road is instantly visible to anyone with a chainsaw. I used to throw them off the property and have them dump the wood already in their truck next to my house, but I found calling the state police and reporting a theft in progress gets better results.

Now, after 50 years my trouble with poachers, trespassers, wood thieves and trash dumpers is near zero. But I'm known as the grouchy *******. Go figure.

prior to hunting season, for the two months prior, make a mixture of scent that will repel the deer in the area they hunt. Take a water bottle, poke some holes in it and mix a concoction of gear oil, diesel, liquid smoke (cooking section) and cheap perfume. walk around and sprinkle that around their stands and the area they hint. Toss the bottle in there too. Once the deer aren't there, neither are they.

I like it! It’s on the list. What has been your experience with needing to renew that in regards to rain events?

My “across the street” about a mile away neighbor had someone drive through his horse fence and baha around in his field last summer. The perp left a can and cigarette butt. State police matched dna to one of the poachers I have problems with and the gig was up. So yes, good point on being prepared to collect evidence. It’s on the list. Thanks!

Got a poultry farm in the area or friends with a grocer? Putrid eggs work great, I've used them in my garden for deer, chucks and rabbits. You could spray some on the deer stands too, maybe add a dead roadkill skunk.....

If the EPA gets wind of this, you will be in more trouble than the poachers

Prob the best thing to do is catch them red handed. Set up electronic surveillance at all entry or most entry roads then go track them.
I agree with you in theory, but....

Not sure about other states, but I tried the trespassing route. There is a list of excuses a mile long as far as why they were on your property. Getting "lost" is the most popular excuse among them.

In NJ:
"A person commits defiant trespassing when he or she enters a place despite having been given notice to stay off the premises. This notice can be given in the form of an actual communication by an angry property owner or it can be communicated through a “PRIVATE PROPERTY” sign. Defiant trespassing is a petty disorderly persons offense, and a conviction could expose the offender to 30 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.00."

Notice the wording in the line that explains the penalty. "could" means you stand a snowball's chance in hell. The easiest out for the trespasser is that they didn't see the signs. There are specs as far as size of signs, height posted, distance apart and age of signs. Signs can be a year or less old. Be off on any one of the specs and the person walks. There goes your cost of a lawyer and your time.

Cost them money. That hits home fast and is remembered a LONG time. Having to shell out 2-3 hundred dollars stings, no matter how much money you make.
