Hey Peacock, could you cut that tree down so we can compare the inside of the wood to the pictures posted above?? Of course you know, I am just kidding.;)

haha

I would LOVE to have the lumber and firewood from this sucker. I will wait for the first sign of it's death.

I believe you are correct!

PA, the second pic shows a pink hue to me, but it might be my graphics board. that was the reason I said sugar maple, that and it's being way heavy.
does the pink hue show up for you?

Yes, after I posted (we both posted at approx. the same time) I saw your post and thought "he's right". Thinking about it, and taking a more relaxed look at the picture here at home tonight, I do believe that it is Sugar Maple. It would explain the weight that he talked about, although Silver is heavy when green, light when dry. Good job! :)

I'm on dialup in this area, and on netzero. I have the netzero highspeed which helps a good bit, but it does so at the loss of graphics resolution. I can choose to display a pic at full quality that my graphics board can display, but it has to reload the pic, and that can take some time. I usually allow a download of lower settings to keep moving along. I was just making sure.

I don't know. The color of that sap wood would really make me think it is a silver maple. Even the heart wood seems to have that color (and I would call it pinkish too). We've spent the last two months cutting down sugar maples and none of them have that color to it. All the silver maples I've seen do though.

I have not noticed the pink hue in the Silver Maple. What I am burning now does not have it, nor did the 5 I cut down last spring. I do know the Sugar Maple tends to have a very tight bark, where the Silver can easily be peeled off of a mature tree. I a going to go back downstairs and look over my wood again.

A leaf would sure help this. The two leaves are very distinctly different. I don't think he was able to locate one though.

+1 Acer saccarinum , Silver Maple is my guess. Could the photo make the bark look darker? Is it wet? Sugar and Norway have smother bark and less DBH in my area. I could be wrong but a leaf and or a twig would really help.
