Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the Husky 338 and the 137 & 142 series? There is a big difference in price and they are all small saws. What is so special about the 338 that makes it more expensive? Is it a Swedish built saw or a Poulan clone?

338 is a professional limbing saw.........

i.e. power companies, tree service.the others are economy homeowner saws.i am not sure where the 338 is made.i would assume sweden.i believe the others are made in the states.

i have a 141 with a moded muffler and i can't imagine any poulan running that good.not for long anyway.

Old Geezer,

Welcome to the site...

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 338 is an over center handle climbing saw, whereas the others you mentioned are rear handled saws?

I think even in Stihl's lineup, the 200T is more expensive than a rear handled counterpart...

I'm not a Husky guy, but I've read and been told that the 1XX series are Poulan clones. Jeff
Not excactly , Jeff.
They are made by Poulan, but they are not the same saws as any Poulan saws. Reportedly some parts are even made in Sweden, but I am not sure of that.

I think you are right.
See the comments on the current 1xx series saws in the above post.
The 339xp is a rear handle version of the 338xp.

What puzzles me is the relatively low power output of these close to 40 cc pro saws (2.3 hp). Not much xtra power with that.
It really seems like they have given them a low power output by purpose....
Too small carb/venturi?
Purposely less than optimal porting?

Does anyone have a clue why it is so?

i wouldn't think you would need more power for .....

trimming limbs over power lines or just thinning trees.
