It's called the "BlockDriver" and according to the web, Reg did in fact invent it. You can purchase it here:

That device seems like alot of work for the climber, wouldn't be easier to notch the wood and tie a tag line to it and pull it over. Seems it would be just as fast and carrying that device around in the tree looks like a pain.

I can see where it could have some very good uses ....... Definately a specialty tool , but appears to be a very good tool ... As I,ve never used all these ropes and blocks and riggin in a tree , I would have to work for someone using them to learn the ropes , litterely !!!! As I have my wife be my ground man , The KISS method seems to work best for me ! Plus as I do most of my tree work rurally I don,t have alot of use for it ..... Last monday I took down some Silver Poplars in a friends yard with the winds to 20 mph ..... As they were leaf less there wasn,t too much pull on them from the wind . But I was waveing around pretty good ... They were cats faced pretty good and about 16-18" on the stump ... Biggest problem was I was wearing my Klien's with pole gaffs and that takes alot of the fun out of being able to walk around and up and down the tree , Crushin my nuts was a real problem , as the bark on them is pretty soft ........ I can't find my Buckingham with the tree gaffs since we moved last summer... The tree gaffs for the Kliens should be here today or at least this week ..........My biggest fear , (Unreasonable ) when topping timber is the tree breaking off underneath me ...... Also on conifers , topping in the wind ...

My biggest fear is taking down a top and when the tree goes forward it never stops and I take the express to the deck , I have heard but have never seen a tree fail at the base while someone is in it so I could only imagine the world of hurt that would put on me.. And living like a turnip having someone feeding me through a straw..

2.20. I watched that a few times. Bad Portawrap control and no tag line.

Assuming the video is presented in order, his lifeline was above and behind him split tail. Watch the piece dropped at 1.19 for a better view.

The blocking down was all done with lifeline below flipline as most climbers do over here.

I watched it real quick in the morning and didn't see that., no problem there.
A friend of mine worked with a guy that died like that, guess that's why it stuck out to me.

I would have cussed the groundman out for not letting that run on the one that swung around.:censored:

Similar to the video described above, I got knocked off my perch once by a log section, closer to the ground, so there was no climbing line. The lowering rope got wedged into the natural crotch and couldn't slide. Log dropped, then swung back up and butted me right off my spurs. THEN my lanyard left me stuck hanging on the bottom side of the heavy leaner, and the log came swinging back down to get me again.

I was squealing like a stuck hog! "Lower the log! Lower the log!" while it proceeded to bat me around a little more. I found out later that he couldn't. Until then I was pretty PO'ed, and only a little bit hurt.

A lowering pulley would have prevented that...but that was before I got enlightened.

What I fear the most: any fall, whether with the tree, or out of it. Shucks, I fear dropping a few feet onto my climbing line. Invariably, I am most concerned about my lanyard popping off the top, as described above.

This is me all day. and I'll even cross my flipline over and snug it if my "spideysense" goes off. I'm refering to the little voice that keeps saving my ass from pain and suffering, I always stop and re-evaluate the cut at the last second, and move accordingly sometimes. Big wood HURTS when it gets to close.;)

i think mine is my saw kicking back at me and cutting my neck, bleeding out and not reaching the ground in time for help.

I had the hanger pole over my head and bumped it with my shoulder knocking it down and the the hook went right through the crease of my elbow , it was about 90 degrees and everytime I unfolded my arm blood ran out , so in about thirty seconds I felt like going to sleep and threw up all over myself before I could reach the ground , I had thirty stitches in my elbow tore my bicep and was bruised from my shoulder to my hand .... It was the last time I ever worked with a group crew that can't climb or help with a rescue ..

This thread got me thinking: I wonder how many times a tree I'm rigging to has almost broken - and I never even knew it? Its possible. sort of freaks me out this thought.

Yeah dude, I wouldn't dwell on that #### too much.

My main fear is the stem snapping because I took too big of a top. Nothin' you can do but go down.

I guess you can try and make sure the tree's trunk doesnt land on you/ try and stay on top of it as its going down.. thats a start anyways. That sounds painful though huh?

I've thought of this scenario many times over the years actually, its always in the back of the mind.. but right there up front too if ya know what I mean.

Yeah, just unclip your lanyard and jump just before it hits the ground. This will have a reverse effect on the momentum of falling and you'll merely float off the tree and onto the lawn. Works great.
