Ya ever underbid a job just so you can do some big wood cutting?

be careful bidding those bigger trees. Remember that as a tree doubles in diameter, there is 4 times as much wood. So a 5 footer isn't twice as much work as a 2 footer, it's about 5 times as much work. Bear that number roughly in mind when comparing it to smaller trees for time comparisons.

+1 on heavy equipment. If you have to cut, rip and block into hand manageable pieces and load by hand into a truck or trailer then don't expect to get much more than 15~20' of 5' trunk done in a day. You will achieve less on each consecutive day.

I try not to do big trees at all any more. You can do 2 or 3 smaller jobs in the same time with less risk, less wear on yourself and your gear, and make more money too. I still bid big jobs, but I bid them for a crane, and with a healthy margin. If I win them, they're worth doing. If not, I'm glad that it ties up some young sucker for those 3 or 4 days; I'll probably make 5 grand in the time it takes him to break even on that tree.
