Planing to buy a Poland 252 geardrive chainsaw, would like some info first.

I hope this post is in the right spot.

I have been looking for a older chainsaw for a wile now, something on the large size, to spend some time fixing up. It will mostly just be sitting beside my old Partner K12 steel / concrete saw. And used as a emergency back up, incase a tree fall's across my long wooded driveway.

A guy I know has a Poulan 252 say's it's been hanging in his shed for well over 20 year's and it's to heavy for anything he's ever needed, and to make him a offer.
All I know is it's a Poulan 252, gear drive, with the number 71009 cast onto the side.

What I want to know is, around what year was it made, and should I try to start it before making a offer / or buy it and take it apart / clean it / rebuild it first, before starting it.
and if at all possible, a price range for running / as is.

I do not know alot about these saws but I did look it up.
I believe it is a Poulan 252 that was produced around 1970 and is 73.7 cc.

But there'll have to be something wrong with something if I dont get it.
it's a beast, all cast body, I think the bar was something like 4 1/2" wide, by 28" long +/- 2" , its next to my size 13 boots for size refrence.

I will let the cat out of the bag. That is not a very common saw. It is similar to the 245 style Poulan, but with a gear drive. It really should belong in the hands of a Poulan collector. I am sure you have a pile of PM's on it already, so I won't even bother. You could get the saw, and swap it with someone for a more useable saw any day of the week. If you do decide to keep it, PLEASE go over to the Poulan thread and share some pics. Also do a little reading over there, and get the seals replaced and the carb rebuilt. It would truly be a shame to hear that it got blown up due to an air leak or fuel delivery issue.

Annnnddd, you can put me on the list behind all of the night owls who already responded.

I for one would like to see some more/better picures of that saw. I'm not sure what it is but somethings dont look right to me and it may not be a 252.

wow, ya, thanks for the feedback everyone, I didn't expect so much so fast, for being my first post here.

I posted more pics on the first post. and 1 here, only have the 6 pic's.
the guy lives a hour and a half away, I took the pics wile I was there, will not go back out that way until spring or unless I go there to buy it first.

Ah yeah, the more pictures did it for me. It is for sure a 252 but the lighting was playing tricks on the camera in the first picture.

That saw should have a 1/2" pitch chain on it and the stack muffler may or maynot be correct on it. All the documents show a tin muffler for a 252 and a stack on the 252A but with old Poulans you never say never.

Let us know what you end up doing. That saw belongs in a collectors hands or at least someone who knows what it is. It also needs to be gone comepletly through before being brought back to life. Least thats how I believe it anyway.

I'm planning on getting the saw, if I was to trade it for anything it would have to be at least a comparable sized full mettle boded saw, lightweight means nothing at all to me. I wouldn't be interested in selling it even at a profit, and any trades would have to be in person. Sorry for any inconveniences on that.

I understand it is more of a collectors piece, but I have no plans to use it all the time.
I'm willing to fix it up like new and keep it just as a dependable "emergency use" saw when it's not hanging in my man cave. I'm 6'3" 240 lbs in my 30's the un-yielding nature of the gear drive will suit me just fine.

I would appreciate any recommendations or suggestions for a 1/2" pitch chain and/or a deferent bar if I should replace it. I'm thinking about tungsten carbide teeth but open to any additional input.

The post and pm's I got so far has helped me a lot, and I thank all of y'all for them.

Nice that you got it, thats a good one for a collector to find.

Please take Tims advice though and dont try to start or run that saw till it is completly checked over. Pull the muffler and check nothings rusted up and lube it up if its ok. A minumum of fuel lines, carb rebuild, recoil servce, ign service etc. Also make sure the foam seal between the handle assy and the crankcase isnt crumbling or even missing as it will defeat the air filter in a hurry if it is.

Make sure the gearbox is full of 80/90 gear oil.

That is a rare saw and deserves not to be torn up from lack of maintence or even worse not knowing what to do.

As for the chain, 1/2" is whats supposed to be on it and it is hard to find that chain today and expensive when you do. Sprockets for the Poulan gear drives are pretty much different then most other gear drives and are hard to find also.

Poulan 252 Gear Drive, work log

Now that I have the saw, should I make a new topic for the work log or what not on it? or just keep adding to this thread? Got the saw half way taken apart now, I'm taking my time with it. I'll wait till I get the screws, nut's, and bolts loosened / out of it befor making a teardown vid, so no one has to waste 45 minutes watching me fumble around. I'll list the problems I see with it after I get it the rest of it apart. From the looks of it, the piston, inner cylinder and gear's all look clean and problim free. I havent cleaned anything yet, this is what it looks like sofar.

Looks OK so far cept they routed the fuel line wrong on it and looks like they used a Mac chain adjuster on it along with the Mac bar.

I might have a pic of the corrrect fuel line routing, I'll try to find it tonight.
