ok i got the clutch side in fine now i need to do the flywheel side i already screwed up one seal and at $12 a piece id rather not do that again whats the best way to get this in? thanks chris

Chris- I lightly lube the inside of the bearing race where the seal goes, and I set the seal in, and using a 21mm socket (or 7/8") and a rubber mallet very lightly start tapping it in. The shoulder of the seal should be flush with the rim of the bearing race.

It's MUCH cheaper to buy the set of gaskets, 1128 007 1050, than the individual seals and gaskets.

You need to grease the deal lips before installation, and make very sure you don't insert them too deep... (or too shallow).

i bought a gasket set but i didn't see buying another one for this tiny seal come to find out this thing is the same price

Would a arbor press work for setting the seals or would that be too much pressure. Or would the mallet and socket be the better route? And Lakeside, you mentioned not putting it in to far but not too short, how do you know when it's in far enough but not too far? Thanks. Evan

Use a small hammer (not a big Mallet) and socket. You need to gently tap the seal in, and after every tap adjust WHERE you tap to make sure it's going in straight.

Depth... for the 044 : On the clutch side, FLUSH with the top of the bearing. Go any deaper and the seal will rub on the bearing. Flywheel side - Flush with the machined bosses inside the casting. You'll need to choose your socket carefully.

I understand the clutch side but what do you mean by machined bosses? On the case or on the bearing? Thanks. Evan

On the case. Depends on the exact casing you have, but there is a recessed part below the gernerator mounting bosses. Look on page 47 of the service manual - you can see what I mean in the picture.
