Nice job on the Hornet.:msp_thumbsup:

Some day mcbob I will find one..

Mall Square Chisel Chain

Could use some assistance filing this square chisel chain. It is 3/4 pitch chain and most closely resembles this mall brand chain:

Chain Saw Chain

However, you'll notice that the chain I have has a one piece cutter/raker which resembles the the Disston chain here:

Chain Saw Chain

Any assistance you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated including what type of file to use. Wondered if this would be different than filing smaller pitch square ground chain.

Looks like there are three different angles to file there, making it matter which one is filed first. Or maybe the top plate and that tiny angle could be done together with a mill ******* file. I think that was the intention of the manufacturer, to make sure everyone could use a file they already used for all other filing jobs. I think the large side plate would have to be first, but I'm not sure. Anyone else have an opinion?

Steve, you may get a answer if ya go over to the chainsaw section. We dont mess with square file to much. I cant keep outta the dirt and rocks :D

Thanks, LP. The reason I put it here is because it's large pitch chain - 3/4". Thought that may make a difference in how it needed to be filed and because it's for a two man saw, I thought some of these aficionado's on here would have run into this "animal" before and know how to file it. Otherwise I'll be sort of flying by the seat of my pants. I suppose if I attempt to file it and it's wrong I'll be able to round file it. Got plenty of tooth left.

I just went through the Disston book for that sqaure chain and cant find anything for that extra notch yours has. If it was mine I would focus on the main cutter with a square file till it folds into that upper notch and maybe just make a couple passes on the top notch till it dissapears.

I think this multi grind chain was a short lived prototype as they transitioned from scratcher to the current square and round cutters.
