Fortunately in this state there are no OWB regs... yet. They have them in WA and CA though. And some local cities restrict use on stale air days in winter. And you cannot use them year round here; fire season restricts any burning. But that is during the summer months when the OWB is shut off here.

I wonder when the EPA will ban them though? And there is nothing to keep someone stupid from buring tires in a cleaner unit either. Then they will all get riled up in NY and MA, and OH, and carry torches to the houses with the smoking OWBs. ... well, er, that is carry flashlights to the houses with the OWBs, in their eco kleen battery powered cars and all.

Those of us who burn wood for all or part of our energy needs are always going to be in the minority, no matter how expensive oil or natural gas may become in the future.

In a democracy, the majority can regulate the activities of the minority on the basis of health or nuisance or whatever else may be contrived. Look at what happened to smoking in the matter of only a few years, and smokers while still a minority were a much larger group than wood burners. Try telling a group of angry neighbors about the benefits of wood burning (reduction in dependence on foreign oil) when all they care about is the smell coming from the OWB on their block.

yeah the environmental wackos and liberal government will be the end of us all. It will only get worse as time goes on....

That's a pretty broad statement there JPP. What makes you think it's Liberal Goverment that's the problem? Your "new" 200ft regulation has been put in place with a Conservative Gov in Office. Lets look at at the past 8 years? Triple oil prices, plunging dollar, economy in the tank, the worst budget and trade deficeit in history and on and on Conservatives in office too? Hmmmmmmmm?

Bush is not a conservative.

Bush is not a conservative.

And he also is not reponsible for tripling oil prices, etc.

Clinton benefited from Reaganomics. Bush has had to endure the poor choices of the Clinton administration. There is always a lag between and administations actions, and the effect on society.

you have to get past the letter in front of their name.

it means nothing now.

Yes, I agree, but not an 8 yr. lag. Lets accept some responsibility for this mess. The Bush administration has done nothing besides waging war to the tune of trillions of borrowed dollars, and that is yet to effect effect our economy! Wait till that "lag" comes into play. We're headed for some hard)er)times Zambo. The America I grew up in (I'm 53) is gone. Maybe we've had it easy and it's just a leveling of the playing field? Still doesn't make me feel any better. :bang:

Sorry to get off topic guys. I'll shut it.
I certainly do disagree with the OWB regs for those people who are responsible operators. I've said it before, It seems that a few always screw it up for the many.

Quite a few states and the EPA are moving to regulate OWB's. Some of the states are using 500' as the setback.
http://vtwoodsmoke.org/regl-other.html

Yah, this stuff is mostly in the mid-Atlantic, New England, north Southern and midwest states. The anti-OWB lobby is pretty heavy in those areas, especially NY state and New England. NY's anti-OWB site is full of staged OWB burning photos of people burning tires and rail ties in them. They got the photos from someone who got the photos from someone who... wink-wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean? Zero accountability stuff. About like the commonly quoted EPA claim that one lawn mower pollutes as much as 17 diesel trucks, but no one can say where the claims came from, or where any results are of any tests were done to substantiate those claims. But it does not matter now, the EPA got their legislation to heavilly restrict small engines in 2010. Typical political BS; make some bogus claims and get idiots to swallow them.

Our OWB here is no more than 10 ft from the house. And we NEVER get smoke in the house. High stack, no smoke. But it is for our own good, and for the good of all God's children that we pass more stringent legislation subduing evil, chainsaw and OWB smoke.

Seems that soon the use of wood stoves will incur a tax. Oil is taxed, gas is taxed, electric is taxed, wood is not taxed.

Actually firewood is taxed in NH! I'm not talking commercial sales. If you need more than 10 cord or so for your own private use then you're supposed to pay tax.

As a landowner and wood burner I don't want anyone telling me what to do either. However some folks spoil it for everyone. A fellow in town I'm acquainted with has an OWB and he is a vinyl siding man. Guess how he minimizes his cord wood expenditures? His neighbors shouldn't have to put up with that.

Title for this subject should be: "Government regulates mankind's most primal discovery: Fire."

The government is working on regulating the wheel and the spear next. :dizzy:

Im sure this has been thought of before however here it goes. Say you were to build a new woodshop with a OWB in it and only the stack coming out of it.

How is this different then say my pole barn with a woodburner in it?

It's always the few that screw it up for the many. Tires, garbage, etc...

That's right. all I can recommend is Shhhhhhhhhhh........tell no one.

By 2015 hopefully there should be a retrofit so you could still use your existing OWB. And if it works out like woodstoves - then quite a few companies will no longer make OWB's because they can't meet the EPA standards. In the long run we will have cleaner burning more efficient OWB's.
