New to posting, Joined a couple years ago but after getting a lot of help from the sawmilling forum was about to post and got sucked into a school board position and watched all nonsurvival time disappear. Read the thread comparing 50 and 70cc saws for firewood and was disappointed with not much response to wigglesworth’s post that included my question. So, I’d like to try it again.

I’ve owned an 041 and lost it in a financial squabble. Next I got a 266xp that I’ve run for 25 years +/- until I got it back from the shop as parts in a cardboard box. I’ve narrowed my replacement choice to the three above from some of what’s been said here. I have about 80 acres with some big cedar, some spruce and fir, a fair amount of big white pine and some red oak one of which would be a stretch for three men to reach around. There is also some good size white and yellow birch and a surprising amount of Ostryea virginianus I call catscratch ironwood some up to 16”. I have about 3-4 acres of junk pine to clear and use in a furnace/charcoal project. I have a MF1165 4wd 45hp tractor for skidding with an old Farmi winch, a bucket, forks and backhoe. I have a 99 Dodge 2500 diesel and am looking for a trailer to move the tractor and logs to a neighborhood mill. I also have a Jonsered chainsaw mill with a CS2186 to mill my own lumber.

I’m inclined to move up to the 70cc saws because the 266 with 18in bar seemed to lug down like it was tired when buried. I might use the Jonsered for some of the big stuff I have but would not want to lug it around for very long in the woods. I’m considering the 372 because of what’s been said here and it seems to handle (in the dealers) like the 266. I’m leaning toward the 460 again from what you’ve all said and to get the extra power at the same weight as the 441 though more than the 372. The 44 and 460 seemed to remind me of the 041 when I handled it in the dealers with more weight in the hands and less in the bar. I’m guessing it isn’t much different in weight form the 266. I’m considering the 441 because I’ve had several episodes with the 266 where it got jumping around which was handlable but might be more challenging with the extra cc’s so the difference in the brake system got my attention. I’m suspecting the future support may also be better. I'm 68 and work out to keep up with the kids (NorthEastKingdomVermontKidChauffer).

So, that’s my story, and I apologize its so long but I know something about some of you and wanted to offer the same. What do you think?

When I'm 68, I hope I'm still out there shopping for saws! Good for you and welcome to the site. I suggest you add the Dolmar 7900 to your list. Roughly the same weight as the others, high-quality build with significantly more grunt. Very highly respected saw here.Good luck!

I too run stihls, but have never run the huskys but people really like them. The biggest reason I have the stihls is the dealer is right down the road 2 miles, and he gives me good deals. My brother and I have alot of stihl saws including the 441 and the 460 and they are both really nice saws. The 460 is suppose to have more power but running them next to each other it is hard to tell. But we are just firewood guys that cut for our OWB's. My favorite saw to run on a regular basis is the ms361 w/modded muffler. That is my Rookie .02 worth. I think you will be happy with any of the three!!!!

Yeah, well, I got started late on this family thing so I have to bet on the long odds. The question did occur to me as to who would last the longest! I "retired" to take over child care and it don't really qualify as retirement. Moneys bad, hours are awful but its more fun than anything else I've done so why quit?

From all I've read here I'd look at a Dolmar but I don't know anywhere around here that handles them and I haven't got the time to start figuring all that out on my own.

372XP, or a 460. I thought the 441 handled like a pig, very big in the wrong places. The 460 is big also but has the power to make it manageable. 372XP is a dream for cutting firewood, thinner and more nimble. I run a 20" bar and it makes extremely quick work of felling/bucking up hard maple and oak. Not a real dud in the bunch I suppose.

If I were to suggest anything to someone else, I would say the 441 or 372. All around they're both "better" saws.

But personally, I'm a bigger fan of the 460 myself.

Just out of curiosity, do you recognize what I said about the weight in the hands on the Stihls? My sense of the 266 was that the balance made it feel like you were handling what a two handed sword might feel like where the Stihl's seem like that weight is back more in the hands.

The 441 doesn't add any benefits over the 372xp, it just adds weight and bulk.

The 460 adds power and grunt, but many say it is a vibe monster with comparatively bad air filtration (I never used one - ruled it out for those reasons).

Completely understandable. The "rookie" answer that forcedintoit gave is 100% spot on. Either one will be a fine saw. In fact, whichever one you choose will get a "you picked the best saw" comment from many here. All their relative weaknesses and strengths balance out to make them pretty much equals.

Is that the long version of school bus driver?

Man!!! If it were only to school I could breathe, but I've been across the state more times than I care to think and out to Kentucky and Indiana in the last month and the youngest hasn't even started to roll yet!

I run stihls I feel you get more bang for your buck. I don't have any problem throwin my 441 around. I mostly run 20'' bar on it. No I don't run it all day long. Just to cut down trees & buckin em until the wood is small enuf to get my MS260- 16'' bar through. I have ran a few huskeys but to me the stihls just feel better. :chainsaw:

Thanks! the thinner and more nimble get at my sense of how they handle differently. I'm cutting roads to firewood right now but I've got some fairly big logs, some in the pine and some in the birch that will become more of what I'll be doing and I've wondered if as I get into it I won't wish I had that little bit more power. That is run against the notion of what it's like to limb with a saw that's more than you need. That's why I'm interested in what people think about how they balance.

id pick both the 372 and 460 over the 441

372 is a damn smooth running and operating saw.. but in reality you cant go wring with any of them, though the 441 is last in this list of saws in my opion.

if your running a 372 and 460 back back while dragn a 28" chain you most definatly notice it vibrates less. but the 460s vibe is no big deal. pick wichever of these saws feels best to you.

if the 441 feels better then these two then buy it. you wont have ran the other to so youl be plenty happy with it.

Thanks! Seems as if I've heard that somewhere before but it reminds me that this past couple months have been real hard on my hands. I was pushing pretty hard to get as much down off the hill before the snow stopped me. My right hand finally seems to be getting over most of the numbness. I've kind of assumed almost anything fairly new would have to be better than the 266.

I'd really like to go to the two saw strategy you suggest and others have referred to in the 50cc 70cc comparison thread but I've a daughter headed for college and that is an option that won't even get on the table for discussion.

i think you know you want to pic the 372. it would not be my choice in saw if i was going to spend 800 bucks but it sounds like it might be the choice for you.

so here ill make it easy and say the 372 is the best saw for you :greenchainsaw:
