Alright, alright. It was meant as some sort of joke concerning the facts that I just bought a 441 and yet was seconding the suggestion for a 361. I dunno, it was all so clear last night.:dizzy:

I have done some searches to look into a 24" bar on the 440. I will mostly working with Chestnut Oak, White Oak, Red Oak, Black Oak, Ash, Silver Maple, Red Maple, Shagbark/Pignut Hickory, Tulip Poplar, and some of the softer woods, Eastern Hemlock, Pine and Cedar. The hard wood trees are not Lumber quality, (very crooked), but great for firewood. The softwood trees are clean up only.

The 440 with a 24" bar may not be optimal, but I would think it would be worlds apart from a muffler modded 026 with an 18" bar?

You are correct. The 026 is in a different league, no match at all for a 440. The 440 will run a 24inch bar with ease.

Thanks for the reassurance. I think I have it settled, for the next 10 minutes anyway. This site is very, very bad news!!! :greenchainsaw:

I haven't read this whole thread but if you've been lead to believe a 440 won't run a 24inch someone is pulling your leg bigtime. As for the the differance between the 441 and the 440 power wise, the 441 is abit more power and its a whole lot smoother. Weighs more though. Its all a matter of choice. Will say the 440 is a old time favorite. Stihl has claimed for years its one of the best selling saws in the world so no doult its a goodie....

Good post, I recently chose the Husky 372 over the 441, for several reasons, even though the 441 cost a lot less than the 372 here - not beeing a "test pilot" is just one of the reasons.....:taped:

Hey Troll don't fear, I'm the test pilot on the 441. Even Ben Walker said it was a "ok" unit so whats that tell ya,LOLOL. He said its no 372 though. I agree with him 100%, thank goodness its not, hahaha, gotcha, lol

Just from some past threads it looked like the preference was a 20" bar on the 440 and 28 on the 640 for hardwoods. I am so new to this I have no idea what to expect. I do know I would like a 24" bar, but am definitely trying to keep the purchase price as low as I can for my application. It doesn't matter to me if I have hot off the drawing board equipment. I definitely want the saw to handel the bar and it sounds as though I have a match with the 440 & 24" bar. Thanks for your help.

Got your back sawtroll while your gone.

Maybe I misunderstood. I saw where you said you will be using this saw for only a dozen or so trees per year, so I chimed in on the 361 suggestion. But you are talking about cutting and milling these trees with the 24" bar aren't you, in which case bigger=better.

I know this topic has been pounded into the ground over and over.

The 24" bar was my main concern and I am planning a trip to another Dolmar dealer next week to try out the 7300. It may be a little better match. I know the 7900 is only a little more $, but I'm not sure I need that much power for my application.

Not sure if I need that much power? That's crazy talk.

What is a fair price on a new 440 with a 24" bar? I know the credit card companies take a small chunk so I would offer my dealer cash. He is a small shop and so far he has given me great service.

Possible milling in the future, but if I get that far that would be a great excuse to add another saw!!

When I mention 12 trees, felling only. There are lots to be cleaned up that have fallen over. The farm has been let go for over 30 years. I'm guessing there is about 30 cord laying all over the place.

Why did you dismiss the 441? I'm not sure of the price difference, but it can't be a showstopper. I went through the same thing, and decided I wanted the new technology. It is smooth. If you get a chance, you should try a side by side comparison.

I have an eleven year old 026 that has done about 50 cord of wood along with some clean up. The thing runs great. After I drilled out the muffler, I had it retuned and that is all the shop work that has been done to it. I keep the filter clean, run the gas out between outings, and give it a good rubdown every time I throw on a fresh chain. Great dependablility. I think I will stick with the "old" engineering in the 440. I don't think I will get a chance to run them side by side. I'm sure Stihl has done their homework with the 441, I also feel comfortable the 440 will fit the bill. I'll probably cut down and cut up about 20 trees this coming year and just want the extra power over the 026. It takes along time to clean up a 34" DBH Red Oak with an 18" bar on my 026. Hopefully this reasoning makes sense.
