I have an eleven year old 026 that has done about 50 cord of wood along with some clean up. The thing runs great. After I drilled out the muffler, I had it retuned and that is all the shop work that has been done to it. I keep the filter clean, run the gas out between outings, and give it a good rubdown every time I throw on a fresh chain. Great dependablility. I think I will stick with the "old" engineering in the 440. I don't think I will get a chance to run them side by side. I'm sure Stihl has done their homework with the 441, I also feel comfortable the 440 will fit the bill. I'll probably cut down and cut up about 20 trees this coming year and just want the extra power over the 026. It takes along time to clean up a 34" DBH Red Oak with an 18" bar on my 026. Hopefully this reasoning makes sense.

Awesome saw dude, you won't be disappointed...

I am like Mr. Wilson in his thinking, I like new technology. I purchased a 441 in September of this year and traded in a mint 044. The 044 is a great saw but I like the 441 better. The trottle response is much quicker and there is a huge difference in vibration level to the operator. Perhaps it was a "leap of faith" in Stihl to be a test pilot for a new product but I was sure that they had done their homework on this model. Everyone will agree the 044/440 series has been one of Stihl's most popular products, they would not want to stumble with the replacement and take a chance on losing market share. Speaking of test pilots I am glad some of my esteemed members on this forum don't design and build airplanes or we would still be using Orville and Wilbur's stuff, you know, no "new fangled" things to worry about.

I started going to a great stihl dealer further away and we have been BS'ing about saws twice now. He has them all in stock and has not sold a 441 yet, one ugly saw IMO. But he says after people demo the saws 440,441,460, they all either buy the 440 or 460 and he always recommends the 460 and even stated himself that he dont like the 441

Well that's because when you tell a customer you don't like it, most will back away and buy what you recommend.

I am real happy with mine a good step forward from the 440.
Not like the 575.

I really doubt that it tells the customers that are demo-ing the saws that he dont care for the 441. We we shooting the **** like you would a friend and he knows I would not buy any of the 3 anyways. He was just being honest with me IMO. I like the 7900 for that class.

Naw, I haven't even run a tank of gas through it yet. And it's raining again today. I'll leave the mud logging to Cisco. It usually rains here from the first of November till between Xmas and New Years. Then it gets colder than snot and freezes everything up. That's when I'll start dragging logs out. Then in the spring when it's muddy again, I'll process them.
Apparently the humped back is to accomodate the HD filter that came with it. Don't you have to leave the cover off for it on a lot of models?

Sides, I need to get caught up on a lot of things around the house and shop that got put off during hunting season. And during the summer. Last spring wasn't good either. Course last winter I played in the woods.

No.... Why do you think that's the case?

Before I started this thread I thought I had the 441 settled. I definitely like the way the filter cover is attached to the saw. I have had some trouble with the 026 filter cover staying on while felling trees. This past spring I thinned about 1,500 trees & sapplings out of a 3 acre black, white, red oak growth area and was getting tired of putting the filter back on all the time. After getting some responses back, I'm going to talk to my dealer tomorrow and kick both of these around again. My dealer has not sold a 441 yet either. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Guess I'm thinking of pictures like these I've seen in Bailey's catalog. My mistake.

I would like to ask you something, the owner's manual says I have to put a standard filter in it for the winter operation switch to work. I looked it over the best I could without tearing things apart and can't see why. Do I?

Well, i know that there is fat bittomed 372s out the also, but those are a bit better/nicer designed ...- doesn't have that very obvious "fat bottomed" design......:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

....and my post had a "double bottom"........:hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

I almost posted on this yesterday as a good point of the 441. I lost the summer/winter plate out of my 390 because of the cover falling off. Hopefully the rat that stole it burnt it up last summer. Or maybe it works the other way. I love this, can't even pop them open by hand, must use scrench.
There's been a couple of mentions of wanting to stay away from the new technology. Isn't a lot of what changed this saw from the 440 been checked out in the 361? I don't know squat, just asking.

leaving the flap open in warm weather causes a nice heat seizure to saw... been there, done that...
