absolute smallest, lightest saw?

Just build a nitro burning RC direct drive palm saw. If I had the time I'd build one myself. Step the bar down to 4"-6" on that one horse puppy.

That would be great, other than the fuel. Could the saw have a form factor along these lines:

From what I found on Tanaka's web site, their smallest saw is heavier than the MS200 (9lbs vs 8.16lbs), and yet is less powerful than the MS192 (1.6hp vs 1.7hp). That doesn't sound like a winner to me.

Right now, the winner looks like the Echo 271 at 6.6 lbs, with the Stihl ms192 in second place at 7lbs.

That's not exactly a small squirrel.

You can't go wrong with the CS-271T. Not exactly inexpensive but if it's anywhere nearly as good as my CS346, you'll be happy with it. Personally, I don't like top handle chainsaws because they're not the best for lefthanders. Awkward to use. That's why I went for a rear handle CS346. I was also pleased to know that the 346 is a pro grade saw.

Some guys just don't get it. That was a joke for a fun saw. You'll never see that kind of RPM in a cut or that much HP.
Just go buy the 192T or the Echo. If you want to go "on the cheap" to start out, go find an old Remington Mighty Might, A Poulan XXV Mini or variation of it, Homie or 009L. You can buy those saws all day long for 20-50 bucks. There is a real nice 009L around here on craigslist for 85 bucks with a case ready to go.

I've got a Homie, Mccullock, Eager Beaver, 009, 009L, Craftsman, Poulan XXV Mini or a variant of it. They are all top handles. Do you like red, orange, grey, green or yellow?

One of my buddies used to run a tree service. He is a staunch Stihl man for bigger saws, but swears by the little top handle Echos.

hard to beat this one, a cut-down and ported 335, 1/4 chain/bar setup, matches a 200T's power, over a pound lighter though

Anyone ever used a Shindiawa 269? It's suppose to be 5.7 lbs PHO and 1.5 hp. That's the lightest I've seen at all, and the power isn't horrible. (Echo 271 is suppose to be 1.6hp)

Those shinnys, nah, try 7lbs(without bar and chain) and 1.0hp. pitifully weak and useless, same with the puny echos

Based on my figures, the 200t is almost 3lbs lighter than the 335, what exactly did you cut off to drop that weight?

Chainbrake and other garbage removed, the stock 200T is heavier than the stock 335xpt, so any claims of a 200T being 3lbs lighter is a mile wrong

p.s. any saw that puts out less than 1.3kw isn't a proper chainsaw, all those little red 0.9kw saws out there, the tanakas shinnys echos etc, in the real world they're good for absolutely nothing, believe it LOL

My numbers must have been off, it looks like a stock 335 is 7.5lbs?

I think I'd want to keep the chainbrake personally.

7.5lbs for a stock 335 sounds close with no bar/chain. probably a bit heavier in reality. chain brake preferences are entirely up to the individual, on TH saws the whole chainbrake comglomeration is around a pound of flapping nuisance to me

I've used an 017 with a 14" carving bar, and it had sufficient power for carving scribes, so I'm thinking that .2hp less would be fine with an 8" bar would be sufficient for very minor carving.

Does anyone know anything about the Echo CS-271T?

I was going to suggest that saw. I had one in the shop a few days ago. The saw belongs to a friend of a friend. He was complaining it had no power.
At 26cc you can't expect much. Anywho I did a muffler mod and pulled the limiters. It helped out quite a bit. He noticed more power instantly and is happy now. It had a 12" bar. By far the lightest saw I've held, and pretty darn compact.

I've had the little Echo for about a year. It's a truck saw so I'll always have it with me. Hasn't gotten a lot of use, but am very happy with it. It's small enough that it'll always be in the truck tool box. You won't set any sawing records with it, but it'll clear the road until you can get your real saw.
