Sounds like vintage saw restoration might be a fun thing. (I've done old mercury outboards in the past, and am doing vintage motocross/harescrambles now. Have a 1982 husqvarna 430XC nd 2 1979 KTM420's..)

What about parts for old Stihl's? For example an old 090? (supposed to be in good running condition...but I know how that goes!) I hear they are big powerful old saws in the 12hp range. Are there people here who could locate parts if they are needed. I have some tree in the 4ft diameter range that need to come down.

(Restoration projects AFTER the purchase of a new saw. Pretty muched convinced that a 372 is the right way to go from feed back from this site....next week or the week after I'm buying one. Slight chance of a 365 instead..based on final price. )

For trees in the 48+inch diameter range, the 090 is THE way to go. Its rated at about 13HP for the direct drive model and 12 for the G model. The 090 will handle ANYTHING you put in front of it, thats why I would be interested in getting one, but theres the matter of saws currently in my stockpile and the wallet being rather empty so I cant get one for a while

With the proper techique a 4 ft dbh tree can be felled with an 18" bar. It is possible to fell a tree with a diameter of up to 3 times the length of your bar, tricky but possible, it requires the first part of the felling cut to be a plunge through the face of the notch. This is not for amateurs and I have not done it myself. Felling and bucking a tree that is approximately twice as large as the bar is easier. Do you think they felled the redwoods with 16 foot bars? NO.

Jacob J.,
That's interesting. I had seen movies of topping with dynamite, but had never heard of falling that way! or I could be remembering wrong...it's been 40+ years since I saw the films.

They also used to fall redwoods using just a 1" auger ( + dynamite ), so you don't even need a chainsaw at all!

I wonder how much wood was wasted doing it like that.

Probably a LOT of wood was wasted with the drill+ KABOOM! method. I've never seen it done so I dont know for sure, I imagine it would waste a lot of bd ft of lumber. It certainly takes a lot of skill to get the right amount of explosives in a tree to just bring it down and not send it into the next county or state, the latter being more complex than it sounds it could most likely be done. Hey an idea just popped into my head, lets mount rockets on a really big tree and call it a spacecraft. we could call it space logging.
