I just received a NOS Mcculloch mac10 20"hard nose bar for my Promac 60 which is an early 10 10 except for the very small bar mount that oils through the unused tension hole. p /n 63543 11 on the bar.
the bar number starts with the number 635, which makes sense since Mcculloch used to use 404 in the larger saws (not mine) so I was going to use the Sthil .325 pitch .635 tang and change the sprocket. A .635chain that is new can be forced into the groove of the bar with a lot of force. What do you think is going on? is it possible this is a .58 bar? Would a .635 chain be able to be forced into a .58 bar? I tried it with a couple of different brand-new Stihl chains. thank you

ok, may be the bar number starting with 635 is just a red herring, ill order a 058 chain and when it wears a bit switch 063. not that ill ever cut that much unless I start to get younger.

Use some feeler gauges and confirm the width of the bar groove before you buy any more chains. Most of the 10 Series bars were .050 (check your decimal placement too...).

Typical chain gauges were 0.050", 0.058", and 0.063"

I have to stack about 6 feeler gauges together which doesnt work for accuracy. also who knows what size the groove is since at least 004 slop
must be machined in for tolerance so the chain runs free.

We used to run the next gauge chain up in a worn bar to get more life out of them. Needless to say a .058 chain will NOT work in a new .050 bar. Sounds like what you are trying to do. CJ
