Thanks for posting those pics. I had wondered what they looked like. Looks no different than the cats I've seen in vehicles. The stuff breaks up easily. So they say it's bad to breathe? Why not wear a mask and just knock that junk out of there if you want a non-cat saw?

Picture # 1 shows the spot welds that you have to drill ....2 of them lite tap and this plate is removed .....Brad this is the Cat not the plate its welded to...This piece in the picture gets removed from the screen plate that gets reinstalled...

Next step

I just wanted to expand on 04Ultra's muffler pics above. He had mentioned before about drilling out the two welds, but couldn't quite picture it until he posted the photos -- then it all made sense! :)

So I used a die grinder to cut through the welds and removed the cat to put on the shelf so I could give it to the new owner if I ever decide to sell my new 420.
In the photos below you can see the holes where the welds used to be. No point in filling them, as the screen plate fits right up against the outside cover.

Now that the cat was gone I could concentrate on making the muffler flow even better. The fish-gill slots right under the screen were now the target, so I removed them, then opened both sides of the screen holder. I also removed the deflector from the screen shell that just duplicated the one on the outer shell (see 04Ultra's last photo above).

This next shot is with the outer cover re-installed over the screen shell on the saw. I apologize for the quality of the photo. You can look in the opening past the screen into the inside of the muffler. Lots bigger and less restrictive.
I'd love to see how this differs in actual operation, but I left my tach home today. I'll get back with a report later.

Have fun!

I can now tell you why you guys like your PS420s so well and say they're so strong. I've got one setting here with about 5 minutes run time on it and the compression is already.......................................................................................................195 PSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes you read that right. This will be a 200 PSI saw when it's broken it. No wonder they're so strong.

They are just good saws! I use a 350 as a demo and people are amazed at it! That little 350 sells 420's for me!

Nothing - except that the specs of the 420 places it in no-man land, but a close to pro-quality "homeowner" saw - the old 242xp has .6 more hp for the same cc and weight + 2k more max rpm.

I hate to say this but there must be a big difference between guys like me that actually work with their saws and people who sit around and compare weights and horsepower and rpm capabilities of their saw. I guess I'm a little old school in that I feel that quality isn't necessarily lighter in weight. You'd have a hard time convincing anyone NOT to get a particular saw because of its weight. Its not like we are comparing the weight of a 420 to a 066 or something. Especially when it is obviously a high quality saw and for a lower price tag!!! Good luck with that argument. Robb
