Hi! Been lurking for a while and decided to join. First post.
So, I was given a Stihl 040 http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.nsf/ed1d619968136da688256af40002b8f7/a98b823867454dbc88256ba20016faae?OpenDocument the other day by a friend of mine. Turns out that he's had a couple old saws in the corner of the garage rusting away.
I haven't opened her up completely, just took a look at the carb to get an idea. Inside looks pretty good for having sat around for at least 15 years. I don't get the impression that the original owner used it much, and I know that my friend whom it was given to didn't use it at all.
There is old gas and bar oil still in it, well, not much gass, but some two-part.
My question is this: What should I do with it? I'd really, REALLY like to get it running and use it. Not sure if that's sacriligious or not, I'm getting the slight impression that this is a special saw. Where to get parts, though? I'd rather not go scavenging the net for original parts if new stuff can be fitted. I haven't been able to find much of anything outside of a description on acresinternet and ebay sales of bits.
The thing I'd like to do, if I can get it running at all, is mod it out, get the performance up, thought it'd be funny to have a jacked up forty year old saw.
Thanks for anything you guys can help with, I've already learned a lot.

Yep.. a keeper, but don't mod it... just make it nice, then buy an old clunker 036 and mod the crap out if that!

Are you sure it's an 040? rare...

New parts - getting very thin on all saws of this age. Some NOS parts can be found now and then, but you will be searching the web.

Post some pics.

yep, I'm sure, everything matches up on the body. That was the first thing I checked to make sure, when I found out what it was I had. Wanted to make sure that someone hadn't just popped an 040 cover on some other saw.
