I have a 150 automatic. last week It ran fine. This week it wont start. I cleaned the airfilter and used new fuel and tried a different sparkplug.Points look good. I dont seem to be getting spark to the plug. I pulled the saw apart, but I dont know how to check the coil using an ohm meater. Does anyone know how to test a coil? I grounded the plug to the block and pulled the cord but didnt get spark from the plug? Thanks
Steve..

Steve, did you clean the points?

If not then clean them, if you still dont get spark do this.

Stick a screw driver in the boot and hold it while turning the saw over with the cord. (with the plug out)(Make sure your hand is grounded.)

If you dont feel any jolt your coil or points are to blame, if you feel a jolt but it wont jump the gap on the plug its your condensor.

When the condensor goes you wil feel a pulsed shock from the ignition rather than a whallop.

Its a slight difference but noticable when you get the feel for it.

Or, you could buy a $2.95 spark checker from Wal Mart or a car parts store and not shock yourself repeatedly. You should only get shocked by accident or if you have done something really, really, very, very bad.

I am editing this to add you should get shocked if you are having a heart attack or maybe it is a stroke. When in doubt shock them both, a lot.

RBW uses this method in a "self medicating" way. DIY electroshock therapy. Conventional therapy is expensive.

Saw-$55, Screwdriver-$5, Ability to treat yourself-priceless... :biggrinbounce2:

Mark

Edited for saw value.

Heh, learnt that as a child!

Seroiusly though those spark checkers only tell you wether you have spark or not, they cant help diagnose the problem like your hand can.

If you do as I mentioned and Haul away on the pullstart.....Well.....you get what you deserve.

The real trick to this is pulling the cord fast enough to energise the ignition, but not so fast as to get knocked on your azz or so hard that you miss the pulses if your Cap is bad.

The cap stores the spark energy untill the points close and then release it all at once. When they fail (most times) they short and they wont build enough energy for the spark to jump the gap.

When this occours, and when you get the feel for how fast to pull the cord (start off slow and just sneak up on it) You will feel 2-3 distinct pulses coming from the mag.

If you feel this, Bad Cap, if not Bad coil (Taking into consideration your points are clean)
