The bigger bore saws probably need a compression release, even this saw could use one but us oldtimers were used to starting these high comp saws from the get go. The last one to rap my knuckles was the one I built up for Jeff, that Jonny is a brute, always was even when it had .035 squish , now at .020 squish its much worse on a brand new P&C that will break in and increase in comp.

Jerry, I'm not a little guy and I can pull em over with the best of them, for a little while anyway but the decomp is needed more on these to protect there starter parts!

Heck I started Marks SP125 at the GTG without the decomp and it wasn't as bad to me as what some go on about.

Here is the recoil pulley that came out of mine. There not makeing these anymore either.

I wonder if one of those could be welded...or do you have a spare?

I understand the need for the decomp to protect the starter mechanism, even a small bore with high comp can strip out the starter pawls. The Husqvarna and Jonsered saws seem to have a harder time turning over without a decomp, many of the earlier ones that did not have the decomp are harder to start, 181 and the 2094 are two I have some experience with, also my 266XP are harder to pull over than any Stihl I own or ever ran. I start all my Stihl saws but one without the decomp, the 090`s are the only ones I actually use the decomp on when cold, once warmed up I don`t need or use the decomp on them either.

I dunno...but it sure looks a lot like my XL 923

I figured it was one of the XL 9xx series saws. Coming out of Washington State makes me wonder just how hard of a life this saw has had. I have always been skittish of saws coming off the West coast, and out of Canada also, because of the Logging industry.

My "new" XL-12

Picked up a free XL-12 today that is pushing the compression gauge to 170psi. The feller quit using it when a recoil rope replacement went south on him, the spring flew out and he could not get it back in place. Took me a couple tries with my patented system of try it, cuss it, try it, cuss it.

Thats a nice 922 Jerry. Sorry to hear about your FIL being sick. It's pretty cool that homelite is all he ran. Is that 922 still 82cc and electronic ignition?

Sorry about missing your post last night, as far as I know the SXL922 was a 77 cc saw. My FIL is a great old fellow but I don`t think he will be with us much longer, he only ran Homelite saws even for his own firewood. Yes the 922 is an electronic ign.

SXLAO Clutch nut metric??

Are the threads for the clutch nut Metric? The low profile nut that was there was pretty worn and not tall enough in my opinion so I replaced it. The nut I had that fit was a bardened flange nut. The hex size is 15mm but I dont know the thread dia or pitch.

Its just a Super XL Auto that I was gonna fix for a guy. He said keep it, rather than pay $50.00 parts & labor. Ive got a new rim drive clutch drum coming in the mail. Replaced the fuel line (it was broken off at the tank grommet) and will fire it up tomorrow. I'll be sure to get a first start video.

And a crappy cell phone pic with bar.
