I am not sure I am unbiased, but I lean heavily towards the McCullochs

The current saws being sold under the Homelite and McCulloch brands need not apply...

I dig them both.................but I lean towards the Red...

I grew up running homelite gear drives, still have a few, but I think I'm a mac man now. Homelite never had an answer for the 125.

Well I don't know about that. The 2100 and 750 are pretty damn close to the 125. The 125 has a teeny bit of chain speed advantage.....................but it's ugly as hell IMHO (I know RandyMac will kick me in the shins for that opinion). I have a Homelite-nut friend who has talked at length with some of the old Homelite insiders of the late '60s and early '70s. He swears that the 650/750 achitecture was intended to be taken out to 8.0 ci in future models (850Super?), probably to rival the 125's. Guess they decided there wasn't a need afterall.

These are close enough of an 'answer' to the 125's for my purposes. He doesn't mention it, but you can see a 750 powerhead in the first pic:

And here are 2 nice Homies, Super 2100 and
the god almighty 3100G both at 114cc's

Damn that's some eye candy!

I can't vote as i like them both.
Here's my 797G 123cc's

Thanks for putting those pics up Lee. You're a lucky man to have all those beautiful, beastly old saws. I'm of the opinion that the 797 and 797G are gorgeous saws. Much more sexy than the 125 family. I don't care if the 125's have a bit more poop. 123cc and great looks are a hard combination to argue with.

There were some posts a few years ago hinting about the existance of an 850 prototype saw. Not an XL-850, but a real 850 pro series. It'd be incredible if someone knew the real scoop on this, whether a series of prototypes were ever acutually built, or if its all just fantasy. Personally, I think the 750 bottom end would have needed some beefin' up to handle 8 cubes. Probably would have taken a good bit of engineering to make it work successfully.

Unfortunately, I believe the old Homelite fellows my friend talked to are all cutting wood Upstairs now. There's gotta be some old Homelite/Textron records somewhere. Hopefully they didn't all get destroyed. I know that most of the old International Harvester records were thakfuly saved by a university (and are available for examination by appointment). Can't remember which university ATM...

I have both, but fewer problems with the Homeys as far as dependability goes. Super XL's are ready to cut wood whenever I am.

I see Homelite is catching up in the poll.
I like them both but McCulloch just alittle more.

I like both Mac and Homelite fairly equally. Their big saws are great but not flawless, I think Homelite has the edge on mini saws. Think I'd much rather have a Super 2 than a Mini-Mac (I have both). I have a VI944 and several Super XLs, Plus a 360. I also have a 610 Pro Mac, a PM700 and a 10-10 which I like a lot so I'm really on the fence and I can't really say one over the other.
