I just finished some work here and the guy wants to pay me with this saw. It has an 18" bar and would go into the same pile as my 029's and 028AV as a firewood saw. The guy only owes me about $160 so I'm pretty sure I'm going to say yes but I've never run one of these. Any opinions?
TIA, John..........

how old is the saw? is he the original owner? Is it in good condition? IMO - if it is in good condition and runs good, then that would be a decent deal. I love mine for fire wood and taking down medium sized trees.

I have not torn the saw down but it looked at least as good as any of my other used saws. It won't win a beauty contest but it doesn't have coat hanger wire holding anything on either. The air filter and the bar look very good and the compression felt good. It's running way too rich which I would prefer to too lean.

Over and above what nj has posted, its one of the best saws ever manufactured out of Stihl or any manufacturer for that matter, if in normal cared for condition i will gladly purchase it from you, with a modded muffler at about 5.2 hp it will fit in perfectly.

Please contact me on this saw if you prefer to move it than keep it!

Only if it good of course.

I agree, it sounds like a good deal to me too. go for it. the 036 is a saw I've heard is proven rock solid. if its got good compression idles good, has no slop in the crank bearings, and is relatively clean, then you're getting a good deal IMO.

I just gotta figure out now how to get more power from it!!! Muffler opened up and now thinking about changing to a different air filter.

No, no, no, if in good condition, sold to Lobo, I will make that kitten purrrrrrr !

Used one cutting down small trees under a powerline, not as good as a Husky but a better saw than a ms 361. Nothing special, but for $160 a good deal. Not one of the best saws ever manufactured by a long shot, that honor for Stihl would be 020 (ms200), 034, 066. Two things that are bogus on the 036 is the chain tightening setup and the washer that holds the sprocket on which will come of if you are slashing brush to get to the tree. The dealer has better washers in stock that hold it on but they would rather you buy a new bearing, etc.

You are kidding right, Not as good as Husky !

Dream on!

If you like your 29 you will love the 36, it is lighter and has more power. Worth evry bit of the $160 he owes you if in nice condition

my 036 was an excellent saw. the oiler seemed a bit inadequate but its really made as a pulpwood type saw.. but mine cut full bar hjardwood plenty strong. just had to wait on the oiler ,when in heavy hardwood cut. no big problem.. if i had one it would get modified .excellent saw made even better .

good news and bad

I went back to talk to the guy and it looked like I would have to take the saw or wait to get paid so I came home with a 036. I pulled the muffler and the cyl and piston look dandy. The bearing that locates the clutch is bad but it looks like the crank end and clutch bell are just fine. It looks like it will be a trip to the Stihl dealer for a bearing unless I can figure out the cross. I'll try sending Stihl Tech an email to see if he has the part number handy. Turns out the bar is a 20" and I was a little suprised to see a 8 toothed drive disc on the clutch hub. Thanks All, John.......

Something about the eight toothed drive hub kind of bugged me so I went out to the shop to look and this saw is running .325 chain. Wouldn't this normally have 3/8ths on it?
John.......

normaly that saw comes with a 3/8.
I have a 036 and after I tuned it to the right altitude it runs close to my 440 :blob2: awsome saw

Well the E-Clip is what retains the washer thus retaining the drum thus retaining the bearing. If it all cam apart it was because the E-Clip came off. I believe all of them in the mid range are the same (036, 044, 046, etc). Was it by chance a used saw in which someone tried to put a SAE size E clip on ? If so that may have been your problem as the are not quite the right size.
