Missed deal follow up..........

I posted this last week. It was the one that got away- a lightly used Stihl MS390 for $75. Today the guy that must have got it has it listed for $595.00!?!?!?

You can tell it's the exact same saw by the marks on the bar. I'm not against buying and flipping for a profit, but that's more than the retail for a brand new MS391.

Craigslist and older 041 Stihl

So, I bought an older 041 Stihl on Craigslist. I am not an expert, but am pretty good at figuring out medium level mechanical issues. I have a few other saws that I rely on so my purchase was more nostalgic than anything. I used to cut wood and sell cordwood in high school and early college years with a few buddies to make money---and loved it because of the workout. We used Jonsered, Huqvarna, and Stihl. I loved the Stihl and would the first one out of the truck to grab it.

I am new here, so sorry for the ramble.

We used to do the basics in terms of cleaning the saws, pulling off covers etc to get the gunk and crap out the way on a daily basis.

Anyhow, I paid $300. for this saw on CL and I am amazed at the poor condition. ( I haven't given my CL seller feedback yet...and have never given a bad review to anybody) It was cobbed together with some screws that didn't match, there are a few chipped pieces on the housing and the thing was totally filthy. He had painted it, so the picture looked great. It was strange as well, there was 33 bids on it and I upped it by $5 bucks 24 hours before and ended up winning the thing. I am not mad---I still think the saw has potential.

AND OF COURSE---it didn't run well when I fired it up. I started with the basics, cleaning with the compressor blower, muffler screen (hate touching the carb adjustment screws) I eventually pulled the carb and removed the plate under it because I have gone that far before with other saws.

MY QUESTION FOR NOW IS---Under that black plate is a cap that looks like a fluid cap, but it isn't...almost over by the oil resevoir area, but on the back side It was cracked, so I worked off slowly and it was connected to some other part inside the saw, I got both of them out along with some sort of snap on washer piece that was loose----What is this part of the saw? I cannot seem to find the cap part anyhwere, the part that was under it seems fine and would screw back in with a new cap...I think, but also wondering what that stray snapon washer went.

Thanks for any help you can offer. I love this site, I was a lurker for a longtime, but now as I have more time to spend on hobby stuff, I decided to join.

You should re-post this in the chainsaw forum.
I think you are talking about the plug in the airbox to get at the oiler adjust screw.
I you want an illustrated parts list (IPL) and a repair manual for the saw PM me with your e-mail and I will send you those so you can ID that part.

Craigslist bidding and feedback?? Do you mean Ebay? If so you have buyer protection if you think the saw is "not as described".

I will let you know

I'll send you 4 buckets of crappy 041's for $300 if you need any parts, got a couple of supers in there.

Seems like I just got one bucket for $300, so four buckets will be a stihl....Just kidding----may get to point the of needing spare parts. Just started working on it and have a carb kit on the way.

I saw that. Go look at it...Get the serial number, then tell him you will have the number checked and get back with him.

Check the original owner data base and let us know what you find out.

Hi Thomas,

What was the issue with "a previous buyer?" Regarding your no return statement.

Thank you,
Scott.

The previous buyer issue was on another auction a couple of years ago.

I sold a like new Makita 6401. The buyer sent me a message that it didn't run right and he wanted a partial refund to cover his estimated repairs, which included a new top end and carburetor. He was looking for 75%+ of the auction cost IIRC. I told him that there was nothing wrong with the saw when it left me and if he returned it I would gladly refund his money, I asked if he had done anything to the saw after he got it and he said he adjusted the carburetor settings. He stated that he had no intention of returning it, but still wanted a refund.

After several messages back and forth, with about the same content, he finally told me that someone re-adjusted the carb and it ran fine.

That would really strip my gears. I'd love to deck guys like that.

Craigslist Sachs Dolmar 152's

Any interest in these?

Dolmar m# 152 10hp (SAE) chain saw. (7 HP more likely.) Will handle the toughest projects. This is a professional grade saw with a custom 28" roller tip bar. Runs great, and as a bonus, I have a second non running unit for parts that I will include in the deal at no additional cost. This saw was purchased from a timber faller in Northern California. I no longer heat with wood and have no use for the saws.
